BEC EXAM – TIME RAN OUT

This was probably one of my worst testing experiences. About 15 questions in to the first testlet & I suddenly felt like my bladder was going to explode. It didn’t help that almost every other question involved intense calculations. The 2nd testlet ended up being a lot easier and only had a few calculations. 3rd testlet sims were tricky but I think I had them down pretty good. One of the sims on the 4th testlet was a little more difficult which took up quite some time. I ended up having 25 minutes left to complete all three written communications and only had a few sentences down on the last one before the time ran out. Any words of encouragement would be appreciated at this point.. good luck to all!

    Hey mj44,

I had a very similar experience minus the bladder part; I got the written communication section with 20 minutes left.

I got through the first one with 11 minutes left, started writing the second and pretty much ended it short with 2 minutes left and just wrote down key words for the 3rd as time ran out. Like yours, there were a lot of calculations, and similar to you had taken enough exams and gotten even 74s and below to know that I needed every point I could get to pass (I have about 6 74s to my name now between aud, bec and reg). The worst part is that the WC questions would have been the easiest on the test since I’d pretty much experienced the situations I was writing about in real life.

I got my score today and somehow someway I managed to get a 75, so not finishing is not a death sentence (I actually made the exact same post about two weeks ago haha).

Best advice is just take a little break and start studying for your next one. Continuing to think and worry about it will only increase your mental fatigue as you start studying again.

Good luck and I hope this helps a little!

My experience was quite similar (I also drank too much coffee before and had to take an extra break).

First testlet was a mix of COSO/IT and different calculation questions. 2nd testlet was almost all theory questions and only had 1 calculation. I couldn't help but think I might have botched the first testlet, but I felt good submitting the 1st, and had only marked 5 questions.

Overall, my SIMS felt easy, with almost all “drop down” provided answers. I had an hour and 20 minutes left for WC, however if you don't know what you want to write as soon as you read the question, you can have all the time in the world and it won't help much.

OMG guys!!! I thought I was gonna pee myself in there lmao
I took it yesterday and had to hold it for two hrs!! It has never happened before and this was #5 at the prometric. BEC is the devil, i hate it soooooo much i cannot express it. It gave me so much mental pain and anxiety 🙁 I dream about it, I hate my life because of it.

It was super hard or maybe i'm just dumb but i literally wanted to bawl staring at that computer screen. I still do as I'm typing it.
So many calculations!!!!! They put every possible calculation on there, except Break-even that I actually knew how to do lol. Some questions were easy, most I had no confidence in the answer at all. Sims were variances and so many file attachments.

WC was ok. I knew the topics enough to bs some stuff and try to keep it in the format but i wish i had more time to expand 🙁

I'm so tired of this exam overall, it's been over a year for me and I cannot wait to be done, although i'm likely taking BEC again. Two more testing windows before my FAR expires :-((((((

I just took BEC and got dominated. I’m a fast test taker and passed BEC once already in 2016. First testlet took an hour, had a ton of calculations and a lot with variance analysis. Second was better, but I had 3 Sims on variance analysis, which I didn’t study. I didn’t even do the writing problems because I knew I wasn’t going to pass lol.

@1skibum AWWWWWW you should've tried the WCs!!! I think we had similar versions.. I had variances and ratios on two sims… one variance i had no idea and left the field blank.. others i am very uncertain about, i dont think i was using the right numbers tbh…

    ugh 🙁

do you think the exam got harder since you took it in 2016?

The pee incident happened my first exam (which was FAR). it sucked. I did have a similar experience with BEC (minus the pee and I had 39 minutes for the WC). I ran out of time as well so 2 minutes before my time expired, I just started typing key words in. I did not finish the third WC and God had mercy on me and gave me a passing score and I am officially done. Don't worry (hard to do I know). Honestly this exams can go either way.

@Painted_Jeans I don't know what I was thinking. My first testlet was bad, then the second wasn't horrible. I got to the SIMS and I panicked because the one wanted me to calculate all the variances, which was like 8 and I didn't know the formulas. I can BS MCQ but not SIMS.

Overall I would say it was a lot more difficult than when I took it in 2016. I remember thinking prior to my exam in 2016 that I didn't know the variance formulas either and I walked out with a 90. Maybe it was just a bad day or that I can't cram like I did in college anymore.

Thanks everyone for providing your similar experiences. I felt like the first testlet was hard because there were so many calculations and the second testlet felt easier because there weren’t many calcs. The sims didn’t feel too difficult for me, just a little time consuming. I’m just hoping the WC isn’t graded on length. The first two WC I got a total of 3 (small) paragraphs down and the last WC I only had one paragraph that included all the buzzwords relative to the topic. I’m hoping I can somehow pull through.

@MJ44 this is why I hardly drink anything before the exam. I like to go in dehydrated. Then I am dying of thirst about the end of the last testlet, but I didn't have to pee haha!

@Painted_Jeans you probably did fine. I wanted to walk out in the middle of BEC. I remember being in the second Testlet and thinking, “what if I just got up and walked out the door and kept walking?” LOL I got a 92. Worst section and best score so far.

@TheeAccountant how did you feel on your sims for your BEC exam?

@theeaccountant yeah I’m going to start going in dehydrated after that experience. Lol I just hope I can get a passing score this time around.

@MJ44 your exam sounds similar to mine. The first two exams I took were horrible. Very long sims and the testlet one and two were Econ and cost accounting heavy. The third one was cost accounting and IT heavy and the sims weren’t that long. Mostly drop downs.
