Are there exceptions to the exam expiration rules?

My FAR score is set to expire on October 9th. I’m scheduled to take my REG exam on Friday, October 7th (after failing it with a 74 in July…the worst).

Here’s the twist: I’m scheduled to take the exam in North Carolina, which is currently under a state of emergency for Hurricane Matthew.

If the test center closes on Friday and I’m not able to take my exam… does anyone know what will happen to my FAR expiration? I know it’s a long shot but are there ever exceptions to the expiration rule?

Thanks for any and all input!

    FAR: 81
    AUD: 72, 71, 87 finally!
    BEC: 79
    REG:

I'll say maybe. I've heard of people getting an extension to take an exam when a relative in a foreign country passed away, so it's possible.

You'll have to talk to your state board about getting an exception and you should do it before you need the exception.

    Two thoughts:

    1. Yes, there are exceptions. They're on a case-by-case basis, subject to board approval, so there's no hard-and-fast rules. If it was a NASBA/AICPA thing, then there could be more precedent, but it's not. As it is, there's some states that past history would indicate would give you an extension and some wouldn't; who knows which one NC is?

    2. Can you re-schedule to a different state? Come inland a bit? Sure, it'll cost $35 to re-schedule and probably require at least one overnight in a hotel, but I'd probably do that rather than risk it. Maybe even go Thursday night, so that you've got a quiet (during the weekday) hotel room to do final prep in, take your test Friday, and then depending on your personality, maybe spend the weekend in the town you tested in just chillin' to celebrate your hopefully-final exam.

On the one hand, a test center being closed is a pretty legitimate reason to miss your final date and they might extend for you. On the other hand, they might say you had many days' warning and should have done something like #2, and it's your own fault for missing the deadline. I don't know which perspective they'll take, and I'm not saying either is right…but, if I had an expiring credit on the line, given that I'm pretty risk-adverse, I'd probably pay for the 1 or 2 nights in a hotel and the reschedule fee to reschedule inland a few hours and make sure it was somewhere that the test center should be open. Of course if you were planning to work all day Friday before taking your exam, then that could make this plan more challenging since getting time off at this point could be difficult, but that might even be able to be handled if your boss would be understanding of your predicament.
