Applying To Become An Alaska CPA. Worried That A Past Employer May Screw Me!

I’ve finally decided to get it done and try to and become a CPA. I already had a degree in Finance, and went back to school to get a degree in Accounting to fulfill my credit requirements. I’m applying to become a CPA in Alaska because the state I currently reside in requires 36 upper level accounting credits and I only have 33. Rather than put that time into another university accounting course I’d rather use it directly study for the CPA exams.

My concern is that AK is asking for my work history. I got fired from the job before my last job. I won’t get into details but they brought in a new manager that wasn’t getting her job done, and no one liked. Everyone was complaining. I was the only employee that wasn’t off probation, and therefore could be fired without cause to make an example.

In any case the bureau chief is know to be quite spiteful. I’m worried that they may do something to sabotage my application, and am somewhat suspicious that she’s been sinking any potential employment opportunities. I’m done with school and looking for full time employment. Any suggestions with how to deal with this? Should I pass the CPA exams and try to apply for licensure in a different jurisdiction? Pay for one of those services to see if she’s bad mouthing me? Not worry about it? Any feedback would be helpful.

I wish I only had 3 credit hours left but I have 6. I will be enrolling with University of North Alabama online to take the 2 courses I need which will be Tax II(gag!) and Audit II. The courses are $595 each. If I were you, take the last course you need and apply in the state you live in for licensure.

I don't think you have to be concerned about that bad employer unless your state requires a work history. All the board of accountancy wants is the work experience requirement fulfilled and for an active CPA to sign off. Are you able to do that with your current position?

Agree with FSU girl, unless you plan to move to and work in Alaska.

Yep, I agree with Recked and FSU girl. In the grand scheme of things a 3 hour course is pretty small in comparison to studying for the CPA exams. I would apply in your state of residence/intended residence. Most states require that you have an active CPA sign off on experience. (1 year in most states, but this does vary). Most states are not going to contact all former employers if you have one to meet the experience requirements, I wouldn't worry about it.

The requirements say: ” two years of accounting experience satisfactory to the board.” Whatever that means. I have 5 years experience. More if you count my jobs tutoring accounting. But I don't think they'll accept those. I guess I'll take my chances, refer them to the old boss at that job that liked me. If worse comes to worse I'll get the additional 3 credit hours doing an internship, and apply though my home state.

Although I'd prefer not to be licensed in the state I reside. I have a crazy ‘baby mama' that's always dragging me to family court and suing me over frivolous bs and false accusations. If I ever go in front of a bad judge, lose custody of my kid, and fall behind on child support; I could lose my license. Then all of this would have been for nothing. I'd rather mitigate that legal risk up front if possible.
