Hello,
I am 24 years old and I have been working as an auditor at a small firm since September of last year. I also started studying for the CPA the same month with Wiley CPA. I just recently found out that I passed my last exam and I wanted to share a few tips with everyone here as I’ve lurked here for FAR too long.
1. Don’t get hung up over whether you have passed on not after taking an exam. I think it is safe to say everyone suffers from this and no matter how many times someone tells you not to worry about it you still do, but I digress, I will tell you again DON’T WORRY! I was 95% certain I had failed REG having only studied around 50 solid hours, yet I pulled through with an 80. It is impossible to predict your score.
2. Utilize the Authoritative Literature. I believe this is the sole reason I passed REG. Give yourself plenty of time for the simulations on REG. AUD simulations were too ambiguous, make sure you have those multiple choice questions down 100% to make up for any points lost during the simulations.
3. Be confident in your yourself. Take stock of your abilities and testing habits. If you are a good test taker, you may be able to afford less study hours. My first test was FAR and I studied 100 hours over 10 weeks, 70 hours for AUD over 7 weeks, 60 hours for BEC over 6 weeks (failed with a 73 after 3 weeks study), and 50 hours for REG.
4. Be aware of ABSOLUTES. This is an important tip for all multiple choice questions, especially for AUD. Take a look at all the answers. 3 out of 4 questions will usually be similar. The one that isn’t the same is usually your answer. Be aware of absolutes such as “must”. If three of the four questions have a “may” and one question a “must” it is usually the “must” and vice versa.
5. Don’t underestimate BEC. This was the only test I failed. I had read post after post of how BEC was the easiest test and I believed it and did not study enough. If you graduated from college you can and will pass the CPA exam if you find the time to study. Do at least 1000 multiple choice questions, BARE MINIMUM.
That’s all I can think of for now. If anyone has any other specific questions I will be glad to answer them. I hope that this post has helped or inspired at least one person.
