Historically, Q3 has always been the best quarter. Q4 you will see a dramatic decrease in pass rates compared to Q3 when looking at FAR in particular

@Bourne – Just looked at the 2016 and you're absolutely right. Tried to find the 2015 and prior scores without any luck. Will keep digging. I'd like to put these up on a data viz and show some trends.

    @drumstick – https://www.aicpa.org/BecomeACPA/CPAExam/PsychometricsandScoring/PassingRates/Pages/default.aspx

You'll notice it's that way for every year listed.

@Bourne – I came here to post that, I was trying to cheat and just change the year in the address bar. I can be really stupid sometimes. Thank you for posting the link!

Wow! Q3 is definitely the ideal testing window. That makes sense, passed my AUD (Q3 2008 & Q3 2017) and REG (Q1 2009).

Looks like Q4 is going to be extra hard, especially for FAR. Currently studying 8-12hrs a day for 3 sections.

I have 3 months of preparation. So far, I am on schedule. Thanks for off-urban/farming/tax seasons, definitely using that extra hours.

I think it has to do with people not putting in as much time as usual to studying due to the holidays. But, I can see where the AICPA likes to keep the pass rates down so it just so happens not as many people pass in the final quarter after a big jump in Q3. Let's hope we're not part of those people lol

I may take 2 exams in q4 and wanted to hear people input on following?

Is the exam just harder in Q4 therefore the lower pass rates?

Is it lower pass rates b/c people are not studying as much during holidays?

    Or something else?

This is kinda scary. I would have taken more exams in Q3 if I known pass rates were higher then.

Did anyone one read the disclaimer on bottom of the link that HOLLY posted? It says something about a new standard? Does that mean pass rates will be higher?

@Bourne , why do you feel FAR rate will go down in Q4 ? Some people says it's holiday season but I wonder CPA exam ends on 10th of Dec ,people normally go into Christmas mode after 15th December.
My view , Q1 and Q2 FAR results were clearly showing FAR was not equally difficult or equally easy compared to other sections and in Q3 they have corrected that skewed or bias.In Q4 normally all except BEC pass rates goes down.In general you can see the new format passing rates are better than old format ( except FAR ).Q4 FAR passing rates will be 47-49% to further correct the skew ,AUD and REG will come down to 43.LOL
Disclaimer :please note my bias and conflict of interest , I am retaking FAR in Q4.

Q1 rates are abysmal because everybody feared the exam changes and tried to rush into passing. That's it.

    FAR- 74, 78 (10/15)
    BEC- 73
    REG- 65, 88 (05/16)
    AUD- 7/16

I figured it's because most of the new graduates are taking it in the Q2/Q3 window. So in the Q4/Q1 windows there's a higher proportion of people taking it that are either struggling with it or doing it after an extended period of time after graduation.

I think people would be better off worrying about being properly prepared for the exam. Worrying about easiest/hardest quarters and exam changes is silly and a waste of energy. If you are prepared you will pass.

That bump in the pass rate for REG was the only reason I passed. We'll see how the score review goes for AUD.

@SpencerJamesCPA If the bump in Reg was the only reason you passed, wouldn't your score have been closer to 75? Don't sell yourself short!

    CPA candidate 3-

your comments have zero merit. That is like saying someone should not play the lottery when the jackpot is $500 million b/c too many people are playing and the chances are slim to win…so instead I will play the $1 million lottery b/c less people will play and my odds are greater to win.
