    Hi guys,

I may have an opportunity to work at a top 10 accounting firm. My question is, as I want to very soon decide whether I want to just take some random classes at my community college for much cheaper or do a Masters program, do these big firms dislike it when you go the cheap route and do random classes like art or basket weaving or do they not really care whether you do that or masters as long as you are eligible for your CPA?

    thank you

My opinion…and I went the community college route…get the masters, but not in accounting. I think it gives you more options down the road…it's almost a necessity for government if you want to go that route…and an MBA, or Masters of taxation…can really add value when/if you go private. One of the data security related masters…or an MBA with data security in it…also has a lot of value.

If you do go community college route…and assuming you already have all of the accounting classes you need…I'd take classes that will actually help you professionally and as a human being. Don't just take easiest possible. History classes…Government…literature…stuff that will help you read/write/analyze. Foreign languages are ALWAYS useful.

I went to the community college for a cheaper or easier option. I don't have an accounting degree, so it didn't help my career (although I was lucky to have a decent accounting job). After finishing the CPA exams, I went back to the school to pursue a Masters. Less than halfway through my program, I got an offer from a great public accounting firm. If you are looking for an opportunity in public accounting, Masters is definitely worth. All the best.

Let's face it, colleges are mostly a scam. I get why they exist, but it's not really for learning anything useful. You could learn more at a public library.

That's only true because our “corporate cultures” and hiring managers have determined that it's true. Which is a shame. They self promulgate their own useless degrees and (lack of) education. So we have degrees and ridiculous pseudo-professional certificates that used to be called job training.

I did the same thing you did ultrarunner…and debating getting a masters now. Would probably go taxation.
