138 Units Completed: Can I take four grad classes to become eligible to sit?

Currently, I have 138 earned units and I live in the state of Utah.

According to the state board, I would need

8 semester hours (12 quarter hours) in graduate level accounting courses

12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) in graduate level business or accounting courses

The other requirements are upper division accounting and business courses.

My question is, instead of completing a MAcc program, would I be able to just take four graduate level courses and fulfill both requirements? I’m hoping that I could double dip with the 12 graduate units and avoid paying the exorbitant fees that is graduate school tuition. That and completing four classes would make me eligible for licensure.

I’ve emailed the state board of Utah with the same question, however, I was hoping that I could get a quick and dirty answer via the forums here.

Does anyone who lives in a state that require graduate units as a part of the 150 have experience with this?

    Any insight would be great.

    Thanks in advance!

check your state. NC allows 4 credits for graduate courses so you may only have to take 3. check to see if utah has required courses in accounting and if it also requires coverage of ither areas in business. NC does not get too specific but some stayes do. i have friends here that met the 150 with a double major in undergrad. utah may post all that online but confirmation from the board is recommended before you spend any money. also ask about any transcript requirements and whether courses have to be attached to a degree or if courses have to be upper level. you may get lucky and only need basket weaving from a community college. be thorough and research what you can and get the board to confirm.

you may also be able to sit for exams with 120 hours complete and finish ed requirement as you take exams. good luck

My state requires 8 accounting graduate level units (basically three classes) for sure and then 12 graduate level units in business or accounting (or four classes). Also in my state, the graduate level units are required for sitting as well -_- It would be a real bummer if I had to go through all the hoops and loops that is the MAcc Program just to be eligible to sit. Hopefully the board gets back to me early on Monday.

I just went and read utah's requirements. They are laid out in such a confusing way it is hard to understand them but yes graduate level is required. You can always sit under a different state and figure it out later. Are you sure you will stay and work in Utah once you are licensed?

It's a tough read for sure, but I was able to figure it out by going with the Bachelor's degree route. I either plan to stay in UT if licensed or move to Nevada. I hear Nevada is an even more strict state.

Here's hoping I could double dip

Nevada's look more like NC. No grad level required. Good luck. Will you have to take the GMAT to take grad level classes? That seems burdensome and adds nothing to the CPA.
