    BS in Management.

While in college, I avioded accounting as much as possible.

Of course I didn't get a job in management right out of college, so I started working in accounting in Las Vegas hotel&casino.

After several jobs in accounting, I moved to IL. IL has a little easier educational requirement to sit for the CPA exam than NV, so here I am!

I have an Industrial Engineering degree. My boss is a business associate of my dad's (both CPAs) who hired me during my senior year of college to work for his investment company. When the market hit the skids in 2009, I went back to school to work towards my CPA as a fall back plan. The market recovered, but I had already invested time and energy into the CPA and wanted to finish what I started. Having the CPA in my back pocket now means I have more options should I ever need a new job or career change.

    REG - 89
    FAR - 84
    AUD - 73, 86
    BEC - 89

    GA Licensed CPA

I was a licensed veterinary technician for 15 years. I worked at a pretty large animal shelter the last 5-7 years of my career and had a serious case of compassion fatigue. I'm that person that had to euthanize animals on a semi regular basis. Literally, the speed and efficiency of my work saved lives – I took it as a personal failure every time I had to euthanize an animal (hundreds over the years). If I had just worked harder and faster……. But you can only do that for so many years before you're simply an empty shell. It's like beating your head continuously on a brick wall, even if you save tens of thousands in the process. Oh, and the pay is crap, because there are hundreds of young'uns chomping at the bit to “work with animals”, not realizing the real life ramifications (I used to be one of those).

I'd always had a private love affair with taxation, so I literally pulled the trigger on a wild hair one day. My mom is a CFO (without a CPA). I come from a highly competitive family, so I thought becoming a CPA would be +1 for me! There was no question in my mind that I would love accounting. My whole life, my mother and I would talk business and accounting just for a fun and interesting topic. I was only surprised that I hadn't thought of it sooner.

It's my first busy season right now, and I don't want to offend anyone, but I nearly laugh out loud when I hear someone in the office say how busy it is. I don't have to go kill a dog today if I don't work fast enough. If I make an error, someone will catch it before it kills someone. I can even take a leisurely 2 minute pee or 15 minute lunch knowing no one's going to die if I do! You can pile my desk 3 feet high and make me work 80 hours a week, and I'll still be ecstatic. I still struggle with guilt when I chat with someone in the office for more than 15 seconds – hard habit to break.

God, I am so happy to be doing taxes! I am still in shock over the wage I get paid – no superhuman life-saving skills required!

My undergrad degree was in behavioral sciences, I taught in public school for a couple years and hated it. I left to have babies and reevaluate my career path. I took an accounting course after baby #1 and it clicked. After baby #2 I was hired at my current firm and I'm a very happy tax accountant. Hate this exam though!

I find it interesting that the OP never told us his story. What's up with that?

Going from finance to accounting isn't that dramatic, I guess?

My BA was in Linguistics with a minor in Anthropology, but there isn't much available for that in the job market unless you're willing to travel, and I had a child who would make that difficult.

So I ended up looking for a job as a receptionist, and there was a local CPA firm that my dad was mildly familiar with, so I applied. I was hired for a different admin position, then ended up replacing the paralegal who was leaving. Anyway, working there, I started to think accounting seemed like something I would be interested in doing. I went back to school in 2007 to start chipping away at my pre-reqs and then my post-bac certificate coursework. I'm taking my last class this term!

    AUD 84 (1/9/14-Wiley books/TB + free materials)
FAR 83 (5/21/14-the above + NINJA 10 Pt Combo Lite)
    REG 84 (7/9/14-Wiley books/TB + NINJA Audio/FC/Notes)
    BEC 76 (10/5/14-Wiley books/TB + NINJA Audio/FC)

Disclaimer: My ninja avatar is not meant to imply that I have any affiliation with this site other than being a forum member. That's a pic of a T-shirt that my daughter gave me for my birthday. 🙂

Started off as Chemical Engineer in college, made a D in Organic Chem and an F in Calc III and decided it wasn't for me. Moved into Economics and received my BS back in '05. I've working in accounting departments since I graduated, since most of the Econ work I could find really required a Masters. Moved into my current department back in 2010 and decided that I really enjoyed accounting and but wasn't sure if I wanted to go CPA or CIA. So back in 2011 I started the quest to get my 150 hours, and I finished back in 2013. But, life being what it is, the stars didn't align for me to start going for the CPA until this year. So here I am, knee-deep in FAR and hoping to take it in the beginning of April.

Using Ninja MCQ, NINJA Notes, Audio, Flashcards and BLITZ, and 2014 Wiley Text

    FAR - (61,63)
    AUD - (68)

    Keep Calm and RTMFQ

Accountant, what is best in life? To crush your MCQs, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentation of their SIMS!

Finance degree. Have been working in accounting for many years now. Wish I would have done this right out of school. So much harder now to find the time to study.
