You can have jealous haters for being too good at work

It’s true, be too good and improve too many things, and others who are above you will think you are a threat and treat you differently. When there is a “status quo”, and people are promoted based on length of membership, people don’t want people below them to succeed.

All environments are different. I've been fortunate enough to where the people above me wanted me to succeed to the point where they would give you a talking if you didn't do what you said you would i.e. take a cpa exam but a certain date. And that's how it should be. The better you do, the better they look to their supervisor, the better the supervisor looks to his and so on and so on.

I have that at work too working for the state and being part of the union. I sometimes hear people grumbling about other people that “are working too hard and making the rest of us look bad.”

I'm at a small CPA firm and do have to agree that some people have gotten upset for the level of effort I put in.

The good news is – everyone who seems to have felt badly against it doesn't effect my pay or any promotions and I get praised from the partners.

Just try to ignore the office gossip and remember one day you'll be filling their seat.

Depends on the environment really. Unfortunately, it is not always a case of the good guy coming out on top. If the boss is in the bad guy's corner, you're SOL. I've witnessed it many times.

I'm a natural skeptic, but this is why I'm always wary of companies that make a big show of experimenting with ‘corporate culture' like they're the next Zappos or Google. If your executives and managers are good people and they hire good people, you don't need all the theatrics. The corporate culture will be palpable.

You have to realize that the workplace, especially in an industry like accounting is a big competition. Everyone is competing for promotions, and the higher you get the less promotions there are to go around. And unfortunately, most accountant types are passive aggressive that you get that type of warfare where people are trying to talk bad behind your back, or hurt your image.

Best way is to “Let the Haters Hate” or if its to the point where even your boss has bought in to the shenanigans “Pack Your Bags and Run!”
