Working Overtime at a Firm

I realize that OT stands for Off Topic. How many of you get paid for your overtime at work? I have worked busy seasons in which I am salary and there is no OT pay. I have also done it where there is OT paid. What do you think of this? If the OT+ Salary ends up being slightly more than the straight Salary job, why not work the OT+Salary?

Also, the OT is not 1.5*hr, it is your regular hourly rate times every hour. Also, the week during busy season changes form 38 hrs minimum to 44. So 50 hrs = 6 OT hours paid out at regular salary/2080. It is paid as a bonus.

If you were working for a Big 4 and we paid only 51,000 in one year, but worked 2200 chargeable hours (when your goal is 1850), that would seem like 350 hours went unrewarded if there is no discretionary bonus. But if you worked 2200 for a small firm at 48,000 and were asked to have 1850 chargeable, that means you would end up with 350 hrs * $23 (48000/2080) paid out as a bonus, you would have 48k = 8k bonus, so 56k.

I would think the bonus pay would actually make people want to work more OT and longer hours during busy season.

I'm a little unsure of what you're asking. All firms that I have worked for have paid for OT in some manner. Either you can (or must) bank some hours to use as future vacation or you get paid your hourly rate for all of your overtime hours.

I know some regional firms have been moving from an OT compensation plan to straight pay and it has made a lot of people unhappy with their compensation as they have not always been transparent in how the calculation the new salaries.

Additionally, I know of another local firm that actually does pay time and half overtime during busy season.

The way our firm does it is we have an overtime bonus calculation formula so you know going into the year exactly what to expect when bonus time comes around. Our formula is the number of hours you work over the standard times percentage of billable hours budget you met times your realization rate.

My first firm I was paid OT and DT for the appropriate hours. I made soooo much money that year, but was completely overworked.

Firm now I get OT anything over 40 hrs, paid out if I want or booked for extra days off paid at regular. I dont even get close to DT anymore! I dont miss the 15 hr work days at all!
