Does anyone know if an unpaid job will be accepted towards the CPA work experience requirement or does it have to be paid?

Depends on your state I guess.
The NY Form 4B does not reference paid vs non-paid, but the supervising CPA must… The CPA must have acted in a supervisory capacity to the applicant in the same employing organization. https://www.op.nysed.gov/prof/cpa/cpa4b.pdf
Same Employing Organization are the 3 words I would focus in on there. If you're not paid, are you really employed?
Also this… Full-time employment is considered to be a 5-day work week with 35-40 hours per week, excluding overtime. (again with the word employment, not volunteering)
More likely than not if your boss/supervisor signs off on your experience, I don't think anyone will ask for W2s or paystubs to actually see that you were paid.
What is your situation that prompts this question? Its an odd one.
I'd suggest your research your states experience forms and instructions.
