3) Because CPA’s are basically the coolest people you’ll ever meet…
Okay maybe not… but it looks a lot cooler on business cards? That’s definitely a good reason.

FAR: 10/05/13April 30, 2013 at 3:21 pm #468631AnonymousInactiveI started out in AR when I was in my early 20s. Then, I moved on to AP, payroll and pretty much around the entire accounting department. Later, I became an Accounting Manager and then a Controller. Then, the economy bit it.
I began sending out resumes that said “Controller” at the top and what I got back was “Wow, your resume is great! Get your CPA and come back and talk to me.” So, here I sit, a Sr. Accountant with 20 years of experience, three weeks away from a CPA.
This road has been hell. I am exhausted, my hair has greyed. I have wrinkles and damn it, I need a nap! But, I'm not giving up. I'm getting this CPA and I will be a Controller. I'm not quitting til I'm there!
It's CPA or BUST for this woman! Boom baby! Bring it on!

April 30, 2013 at 6:25 pm #468633KGC111210ParticipantI've never showed this to anyone, but this is my list I created when I first started in August 2011. I have to open it every once in a while to remind myself.
Reasons why I need to pass the CPA exam:
1. To have the money to give a percent back to God- your Savior and Provider. (Barely pay bills right now.)
2. To provide a better life for my family – (names)
3. More security and peace of mind for family.
4. Help me get out of debt and be financially secure.
5. Better and more opportunities in workforce.
6. I have $XX,XXX in student loans.
7. The review was $X,XXX.
8. You will truly know Accounting.
9. You will have the respect of your co-workers.
Hope this adds a little to this inspiring thread.
All I need is a 75 on May 6th and I'm done!!

It's up to me to earn everything and prove my worth once I get that next level position – – but you can't even get the interview if you haven't gotten the 3 magic letters.

I know I can do it and I know it'll be worth all the hard work in the end. I already have a masters in accounting and it feels like it's never going to be valuable until I finish this test to have the three letters to go with it

May 1, 2013 at 5:09 am #468639AnonymousInactiveI'll try to make a long story short so here goes…
My boss and I recently snagged a really good client (they came to us first, we didn't go to them), I'll call them Dream Client, Inc. Dream Client, Inc. had been using an “accounting firm”, I'll call them Dewey, Cheatum and Howe, for over a year. Well, DC&H had been shafting them on fees the entire time. DC&H made the the tax place in the strip mall down the street look truly professional! When I say shafting them on fees, I'm talking about to the tune of $4,000 a month. Every time they printed anything on a piece of paper for Dream Client Inc, they were charged .25. Every time DC&H filled out a form as simple as a 941 they charged Dream Client Inc, $500. We looked at the paperwork that Dream Client Inc. had from DC&H (the most current was from October 2012!) and it was a piece of cake; bi-weekly payroll, monthly write-up and tax return. We gave them a fee in the $1,000 a month ballpark, not including the tax return, which is probably too much and will get adjusted down later on. Dream Client, Inc. jumped all over that, understanding that the set-up was going to be more. The reason our fee is so much less is because WE KNOW WHAT WE ARE DOING!
My boss asked the CEO of Dream Client Inc, if the outrageous fees were why they decided to make a change. The CEO said they never really questioned the fees because they knew they couldn't hire an in-house CPA for that price. The real reason they wanted to get away from DC&H was because the CEO mentioned that he didn't see any CPA certificates on the walls at DC&H. DC&H told him “You don't really need to be a CPA to be an accountant. We don't feel that it's necessary to take a stupid test that anyone can pass.” My boss told the CEO that DC&H was technically correct. You don't need to be a CPA to be an accountant. The CEO replied “You may not need to be but this is my livelihood. This business is how I feed my family and how my 55 employees feed their families. I'm not taking anymore chances with people who have zero ongoing training and think the CPA exam is a stupid test that anyone can pass. If it were that easy they would have taken it themselves.”
Today, I got to go with the CEO to DC&H to pick up their ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS. DC&H said “I can't get that together right now. I”ll have to get back to you. Who do I need to send it all to?” I gave them my address and told them to send it to my attention, Anita Mitchell, CPA. That was the first time I had actually heard myself say that out loud. Anita Mitchell, CPA! That felt damn good!
It took me 4 1/2 years, nearly $10,000 and took me to a dark place that I'll never go to again, but I can honestly say, IT WAS WORTH IT!!!

May 1, 2013 at 3:10 pm #468641PittCPAhopefullyMemberThink of it like getting a masters degree almost. You will always be limited without it. Plus you won't have to answer questions from people all the time as to why aren't you a CPA yet?

Sorry, off topic…now back to the “Whys.” I hope to have another why for you soon. For now, though I'll stick with my previous answer.
