3) Because CPA’s are basically the coolest people you’ll ever meet…
Okay maybe not… but it looks a lot cooler on business cards? That’s definitely a good reason.

All of the above reasons and:
1) I wasn't raised to be a quitter
2) I've already told the whole world about this/invested over a year
3) While studying, I can't stop thinking all the shit I am going to buy myself when I am done.
4) I can not wait to be able to say I am a CPA!!!!

My main reason to take this exam was personal challenge…. Not for my job, the title, or anything. I just wanted a new challenge in my life; because being married, having a kid, dealing with postpartum blues wasn't enough.
This is very common phrase here, but a good one. If I can do it; so can you…. Don't give up; prove yourself wrong and fight those feeling to quit. Keep at it and you will see those three letters in front of your name before you even know it. 🙂

April 28, 2013 at 2:22 pm #468603JMemberMe: “Hi, I'm Mr. InterFC1 and I'm an accountant.”
Them: “Are you a CPA?”
I feel a sense of inadequacy in the profession without the CPA designation, to tell the truth. Beyond that and the obvious professional benefits that the license entails, I really enjoy the challenge (like jokami stated). I breezed through high school, through college and through my MBA with good grades (at a very good business school) all while playing NCAA Division I athletics, and never really appreciated academics or challenging myself with regard to academics until I got a little older and wiser. The CPA is literally the most comprehensive challenge through which I have put myself, and I've had to learn and develop new skills (for example, creating a study plan and adhering to it for extended periods of time) that I did not need before.

But you don't want to find yourself 40-something with a family and feeling trapped in a job that doesn't give you the things you want out of life. It's an exceptional pain in the butt to study for this with kids and a family.

What if electricity was never discovered? We already had oil/gas lamps?
What if cars were never invented? We already had horses.
What if we never discovered fire? We already had berries and nuts to eat.
You can “what if” your question forever, but in the end, you decided to do this. At some point you were passionate enough to meet the requirements, fill out the paperwork and shell out a huge chunk of cash. Find that passion again and you will find the answer to your question.

April 28, 2013 at 6:15 pm #468613AnonymousInactiveWhy do law practitioners get JDs? Why do medical folks get MDs? I think you are devaluing the CPA a bit. It's a professional, vocational designation that will literally change our careers. I would do a CPA over my MBA any day…
