gonna agree with cpagal. Unless you're in an MST program or had someone explain the logic behind the provisions, the tax portion is going to be more or less memorization.

Agreed. That's why I can't stand taxes. I don't care that max corporate AMT exemption is $40k. If I need to know that info I'll look it up. There's absolutely no logic behind it.

Because the tax stuff is complicated and time consuming. People tend to forget that business law is also a large part of the exam and may not study this as much.

This post is perfect for me… check out my stats below. Does anyone have any advice for this section? I have 7 days 'til my retake and I HAVE to pass this time so I don't lose credits. For someone with prior exam experience, is practicing SIMS really necessary or should I instead spend that time memorizing more data (which will inevitably help with the SIMS)?

Spend more time on theory than precise numbers. Do have a rough idea about the phaseout amounts, but knowing the theory covers most questions.

I made T-accounts for all transactions to help me understand.

Spend almost as much time practicing SIMS as practicing MCQs. They are 40% of your score.

I did over 2,000 MCQ. Also, lean on the Authoritative Literature. That was a huge help.
On my retake I spent a huge portion of my time studying law.

unfortunately their is no logic to tax itself, not everything, but alot of it seems arbitrary. Like certain percentages or phaseout, theirs no logic it just is what it is. Just do you're best and you will find that you will do better then you thought. I was absolutely panicking that their is no way i can pass reg. I only took one course in regards to taxes in college and i remembered nothing, its clique but if i was able to pass i think its fair game for anyone.

I did exactly like you, I passed all other parts without much issue (with very similar scores), but it took until my 4th attempt on REG to get it done.

What put me over the edge was NINJA MCQ. I did a lot of them in the final 2-3 weeks. In the final week, if i got a MCQ question wrong I took notes on what the concept is I did not get right. These are the notes that I reviewed every day to help in my weak areas. I also read through them 2-3 times in my car before entering the testing center. I was very confident going into that test and scored well on it (for someone who only opens our tax software to complete 990s anyway).

This method forced me to study my weak areas, but still touch on my strong areas if NINJA brought them up.

Ohiostategirl, what do you mean by T accounts? This is one section that I barely ever saw that come up.
How did they help you?

To calculate basis, to diagram transfer of property between individuals and entities, just about everywhere I made T-accounts.

Instead of memorizing lists to add and subtract I visualized them into T-accts diagrams.
