Why 77?

    Hi everyone,
I passed FAR with a 77 and my friend passed it with a 87. My friend kept asking my why I studied a lot (more than 200 hours) and got low score (77). How should I answer that question ? She told me that 77 means I almost failed and didn’t study efficiently.

Ignore your friend. This exam is basically pass/fail (with the exception of EWS winners) and an 87 doesn't mean any more than a 77 at the end of the day.

Your friend is mistakenly assuming that the score is a percentage of correct answers and that's not the way it works.

It honestly doesn't matter if you get a 75, 77, or an 87. As long as you pass, the score really doesn't matter. FAR is a beast of an exam and not everyone takes the same exact test. Your friend may have had easier questions than you did but once again, it doesn't make a difference. A 77 is just as good as a 99 in my opinion. I got a 79 on FAR after getting a 74 my first go around. I didn't care as long as I passed. The only time the high score matters is if you're going for the Elijah Watt award or whatever it is called. You have to average a 95.5 (I think) when passing all of the exams and you get money or something for it. I know someone that got a 99 on AUD and was trying for that award but ended up getting an 87 on REG so it ruined her chances. She was really trying to get it but even after all the hours she put in, wasn't able to.

So I guess to answer your question, you could just say that FAR is the toughest of them all and you're glad you passed!

actually a 77 means you studied very efficiently. you studied the right amount that YOU needed to in order to get you slightly over that 75. an 87 studied inefficiently. all you need is a 75, at the end of the day a 77 gets you the exact same thing as an 87.

Some friend…eh? I passed FAR with a 76 and I couldn't care less if I scored a 99. I'm done with FAR and that's all that matters. Tell your friend to pound sand.

They say that if you score over 75, you overstudied. :shrugs: I'm happy as long as it's a passing score. No job is going to be asking about your score. Congrats and keep on studying.

When you are both done with the exam you both will have the SAME certification … no one is any more impressed with an 87 than a 77.

Your friend is so wrong and is a douche. 77 is efficient studying and a 87 is not. What is your friend going to do with those extra 12 points? NOTHING! All you need is a 75! A pass is a pass!

    FAR - 71, 78
    REG - 60, 78

Sounds like you need a new friend. Seriously? That's pretty mean of her to say that. I'm just being blunt here, but seriously the important thing is that you passed. You can remind her that you likely got a worse set of questions than she did – from what I've heard there is a bit of luck with what combination of questions one gets.

Wow! With a friend like that who needs enemies? Honestly, I would seriously consider your relationship with this person. I am in my 40's and have learned through some very painful lessons that letting negative and spiteful people into your life does not benefit you in the long run. Is this friend only this way about he exam or about everything in life? Congrats on passing and who cares what the score was, you will have the same certification in the end 🙂

I agree your friend is being silly. You passed and that is all that matters – at the end of the day you will have the same certificate as others have said – and your scores won't be on them!

I also see it as pass/fail and don't think the scores mean too much.

PS. my favorite quote about CPA – it stands for couldn't pass again (without studying of course). My boss always says that hahaha
