Based on 2009 individual income tax figures (article dated Oct 2011), you are in the top 50% if: Your AGI is $32,396 or more. https://www.kiplinger.com/features/archives/how-your-income-stacks-up.html
If you are in the the top 50%, you and everyone else (those that fall in the 50%-100% ranges) earn 87% of all income and pay 98% of all taxes.
So…should everyone (i.e. the bottom 50%) being paying SOMETHING or is it more “fair” to simply tax the top 1%? I contend that EVERYONE should be making a contribution or they should not be allowed to vote (because typical human nature says those in the cart will vote to ensure our elected representatives are those willing to tax the people pulling the cart).
Everyone paying something would help ensure our elected representatives have everyone’s best interests in mind rather than simply pandering to the “takers” for votes.
