When did the Library become the Community Center/Playground/Blockbuster Video? - Page 2

Is anyone else just a little fed up with a library not really being a library anymore? I come to the library to study because it is supposed to be LESS distracting and MORE quiet than my own home. Yet, everytime I come to the library there is some kind of Chess tournament, book sale, kids running around playing tag, etc. etc.

Maybe I’m a little “old” at the age of 35 but I remember a time from my childhood when a library was a “whisper only” environment and people actually came to read books in peace. Now it seems as if there are more people screwing around on Facebook on the library computers and checking out dvd’s by the dozens while the books sit on the shelves collecting dust. Which, now comes my: “kids today are so screwed up” line, which really makes me seem old.

Perhaps libraries should implement a rule: If you want to check out The Expendables 2, you can only do it after providing a book report on Hemingway’s “A Farewell to Arms.” If you want to check out the new Twilight movie, you can only do it after a synopsis on Bram Stoker’s “Dracula.” You get the idea.

Anyhow Another71 peeps. Thanks for letting me rant. It’s Saturday and I came to the library to read about Audit Procedures by Transaction Cycles and I have all this noise going on around me, I just needed to vent. Back to the grindstone.

i study at the library… It is annoying sometimes.

There is always a mad rush for the quiet room. then at the big library downtown, there literarly 100s of bums that hang out there and stink the place up.

I never liked libraries. And I am not a fan of the “new” generation either…. guess we are slowly turning into our grandparents. Haha.

Our library is next a music pavilion and the noise can be heard throughout the building πŸ™ NThat is why I do not use it as a study area – my home has less noise.

@ MintsRGood. That sounds like a horrible experience – I would been terrified if someone grabbed my shoulder like that! He was incredibly rude!!!

Public libraries have evolved into something more akin to community centers.

If you want quiet, you need to go to a university library – and ask for the quiet zone.

That said, there are some weirdos in the quiet rooms of libraries, and you can expect to meet library trolls like Mints described.

On a recent study session in my (law) library quiet zone, I was surrounded by trolls. When I sat down, the desk next to me was loaded with stuff (including no less than 10 juice bottles lined up in a row, and a backpack, indicating someone must be using it). It wasn't until an hour later that a guy showed up and sat down. Then he started scribbling frantically on a piece of paper with charcoal. Then he got up and left his stuff… returning a half hour later to pursue his art once more and occasionally drink some juice, then up and gone for another 45 minutes, then back to draw – again and again. What inspiration was he finding during his forays into the depths of the law library??

This was punctuated by the guy across the desk wall, who would just burst out laughing maniacally at random intervals. And I assume there was a TB clinic somewhere in the bookshelves, because I could hear some guy coughing up a lung and moaning in pain. After a couple of hours, I sensed someone behind me and I turned around to see a full on Quasimodo hunchback lurching away down an aisle of COMPLETELY EMPTY shelves. I finally decided to leave when I checked my phone and realized I had no reception, and it dawned on me that Quasimodo could have murdered me right there in the quiet room and the Joker would just laugh at me while Picasso incorporated me into his masterpiece.

My two cents: I shared the same thing. I spent countless hours in the public library with earplugs and they never worked. The same dude was there every day, pounding tap tap tap tap on his keyboard like his fingers were sledgehammers. Fortunately I found a solution. The public library was only open from 1-5 on Sundays, which is pointless. So I was outside waiting for it to open on a Sunday, and thought “there's gotta be a better way”. Then I realized there wa a local private college a mile a way. Why I never thought I that is beyond me. I called and asked if their facilities were for students only and they said no. So I've spent the last year and a half with that as my second home. Colleges usually have quite only areas. If you have a local college near you, try that. If not, my response was a total waste πŸ™‚

Every generation thinks the next one is the end of the world lol

+1 to the previous comment about asking for the “quiet zone” at a university. Hadn't had some of the experiences here at my school's library, but am rarely there. I prefer to study at home even with the kids & wife, I can tolerate that much, much more than noises from strangers lol

So glad I found this…..I have been dealing with the nuisances of public libraries for over a year and I have definitely seen it all. Studying at home is usually a big fail for me as I easily get distracted or lazy. So I ventured out to try and find the perfect place to study, and came to the realization that I hate people, lol. I mean the amount of times I have to stop what I am doing to tell someone to shut up, turn their music down, or stop snoring is just ridiculous. I just don't get it, if you need to talk or socialize, why the library, and the whispering for some is a joke, they might as well be shouting at the top of your lungs, it is just as distracting. Needless to say I usually look like I am going to hurt someone at the library….Thank God I am halfway through!!!

the library allows you to reserve a meeting room. I recommend that they are in out of the way places and no disruptions. Maybe find a friend CPA or two to come with you. Occasionally you can get into these meeting rooms when the library isn't open for regular business. you should look into it

    Reg 76
    Bus 82
    Aud 70, 86
Far 68 ,79 ten point combo FTW
