When did the Library become the Community Center/Playground/Blockbuster Video?

Is anyone else just a little fed up with a library not really being a library anymore? I come to the library to study because it is supposed to be LESS distracting and MORE quiet than my own home. Yet, everytime I come to the library there is some kind of Chess tournament, book sale, kids running around playing tag, etc. etc.

Maybe I’m a little “old” at the age of 35 but I remember a time from my childhood when a library was a “whisper only” environment and people actually came to read books in peace. Now it seems as if there are more people screwing around on Facebook on the library computers and checking out dvd’s by the dozens while the books sit on the shelves collecting dust. Which, now comes my: “kids today are so screwed up” line, which really makes me seem old.

Perhaps libraries should implement a rule: If you want to check out The Expendables 2, you can only do it after providing a book report on Hemingway’s “A Farewell to Arms.” If you want to check out the new Twilight movie, you can only do it after a synopsis on Bram Stoker’s “Dracula.” You get the idea.

Anyhow Another71 peeps. Thanks for letting me rant. It’s Saturday and I came to the library to read about Audit Procedures by Transaction Cycles and I have all this noise going on around me, I just needed to vent. Back to the grindstone.

Heh. I'm okay with the DVD rentals and all but I absolutely hate the noise. I remember the whisper only libraries of the past (I'm your age). Kids these days have no manners.

Get soft ear plugs, they really help. I don't mind the kids playing at the library. As a parent I know the options for safe places for kids to hang out are significantly more limited than when I was a kid. But then again, I'm well past my 30's and my tolerance for nuisances has increased quite a bit.

I'm in my 20s but I do share the same concerns as you.

Not just kids, there are adults who do NOT have any library etiquette at all and that drive me nuts!! They talk and conduct other distracting activities. Does your office open on weekend? That was the best place to study for me.

I feel your pain. I tried a public library once and I couldn't go back. I then moved to a community college which can also get rowdy. Now I go to a library on a university campus and its peaceful. The earphones help though if I have to go back to the community college. I'll usually play some classical music and that drowns out the other noise

@RonBurgandy I'm with you that the library is akin to the 7th circle of hell. I have no idea why people think it's starbucks but mine is the same way!

Funny story about why my library sucks:

The last time I attempted to use it I found this empty room in back corner of the library that had a sign that indicated “quiet study” and had a picture of a cellphone with a red circle+line through it and thought I'd hit the lotto! No screaming kids or annoying teen on cell phones, hooray!!! I unpacked my laptop, plugged in my headphones, and thought I was settling in for some QT with Phil Yeager only to be scared half to death by the library troll after about 30 minutes.

He approached me from behind when I was working at an open table that he could have easily walked in front of to get my attention. He grabbed my shoulder hard and tried to spin me around rather than giving a gentle tap on the shoulder!!! He scared me half to death!!!!! I screamed and instinctively grabbed his forearm (remember he was still behind me at that moment and I had NO clue who it was) and I basically tried to throw him over the table! I'm not the incredible hulk or anything but I'm 5'9, somewhat in shape, and considering that he grabbed and pulled me so hard I had NO idea what was about to happen. It was late in the evening and pitch black out, I was in an empty room off the beaten path, couldn't hear the door open due to my headphones, and my first instinct was to defend myself! Once I got him in front of me and saw he was a library employee, I profusely apologized but read him the riot act for making physical contact with me when he could have walked in front of the table to get my attention.

He began to read me the riot act about my laptop and basically telling me I'm a moron because of the sign on the door. When I remarked that the sign said no cellphones, he snapped that it applies to ALL electronics including laptops. I wanted to pour my hot coffee over his head because he was SO freaking rude and for the fact that he physically touched me, but I just smiled and commented that the sign should simply read “no electronics”. I pointed out that I was the ONLY person in this room and he was clearly making much more of a racket by yelling in the quiet room than I was by watching a video with headphones and he was wasting a tremendous amount of my time with quibbling. I explained politely that I'd be happy to move to another location but his sign was misleading. Again, I was very polite but yet still firm and unwilling to take his shit. And I was sticking to my guns that he used poor judgement in shaking a woman's shoulder from behind while it's obvious they are wearing noise canceling headphones and may be frightened.

At that moment, he turned as red as a stop sign and told me that if I didn't leave the library he would call the police. I'll be 100% honest that I began to laugh hysterically and told the library troll to go f*** himself. I reported the incident the next morning to library manager on the phone and she was horrified. I've never been back since!!!!!

i study at the library… It is annoying sometimes.

There is always a mad rush for the quiet room. then at the big library downtown, there literarly 100s of bums that hang out there and stink the place up.
