B.S Finance ~ 2.7 overall ~3.4 major
B.B.A Accounting 4.0
I played baseball and world of Warcraft pretty hardcore during the first 3 of 5.5 years of by B.S. My motto was C's get degrees. Having gone to a small private school no one has heard of and having a pretty awful GPA, its no surprise I was finding myself in a situation with no good job opportunities and no good employers willing to hire me.
I wanted to be a financial planner. I had interviewed with all the local shops and even offered to work for free to gain experience. No one was willing to help me other than provide advice. I spoke with one person in Atlanta who had gone to the same school I had and he suggested taking H&R block's tax training course. So, I did that and enjoyed it. They offered me a job for the upcoming tax season which I did and enjoyed.
So after doing that I decided to go back and get a second degree in accounting. I had originally planned to double major so I had a few accounting courses under my belt. This time around I went to a much larger non private school. As you can see I put a lot more effort into classes and really enjoyed them. Got an internship, got a full time job offer, CPA license and was just promoted to senior after 1.5 years. I'm also sitting for the CFP exam next year.
Reflecting back, I was never really a sub 3 GPA student. I always took pride in school before going to college and was even competitive about it. Never liked to score bad at anything. I think the hardcore gaming took that away from me. I even sucked at baseball and it didn't bother me. I honestly remember thinking to myself “I hope I don't have to pitch.” The 17 yo me would have never even thought that. He would have been pissed to not be given the ball with the base loaded and no one out in a tie call game.
I'd also like to point out that my wife and I had our only child the month before I went back to school. Not sure what we were thinking at the time. It has made things a lot more challenging but that it one thing about my past I wouldn't change.
