mcwingnutzMemberB.S. Accounting – 3.41. When applying for a BIG 4 company that was visiting my university, a 3.4 was the minimum GPA that they would interview. Out of the 4 people that were eventually brought in for office interviews, I was told that I had the lowest GPA of the group. But I was also the only one who had a job througout college, which went a long way in me eventually getting the position. So, your GPA is definately good enough to get you in the door, but you will be going up against people with higher GPAs and you will need something else that makes you stand out.

I agree with what most everyone else has been saying… I think GPA only matters in getting an interview, (depending on which firm/company is interviewing you, they require either 3.0 or 3.5. The Big 4 I interviewed with required 3.5). After that, the only thing that matters is the interview. As I've always interpreted getting a job, the GPA helps you get the interview, but who YOU are gets you the job.

AnonymousInactiveI graduated with a 3.01 in 2001. I wish I would have focused more on school… I was in a sorority and I met my now-husband when we were freshman and we got engaged our senior year. I also didn't change my major to accounting until after my junior year, and had to take tons of upper level business and accounting classes my last 2 semesters to graduate on time. I didn't have any problem getting a job though – in fact, I got offers from all Big 5 accounting firms. This is definitely a sign of the times… now they probably won't even look at you with a GPA that low.

mdrobbinMember2.97 undergrad and my accounting and finance majors I believe were both lower. This was a huge barrier to getting my foot in the door and I kicked myself for years about my undergrad GPA as I was more focused on having fun in college than keeping my grades up.
GPA is such a crapshoot as is everything when hiring entry level employees out of college. I had a 2.97 but work my freaking rear end off when it comes to my career and I always knew I would (it was just a matter of finding an employer that believed what I was saying). I see entry level employees come and go in the real work environment. Some stellar students have a completely terrible work ethic or, more often, feel entitled to moving up fast without having to prove themselves.
If any future employers were to dig up my GPA as a point of judgement after logging true experience and achievements, I'd probably walk out of the interview before they had a chance to turn me down 🙂
Hard work and treating peers with respect (well the second one I go by, don't know that other successful people always follow it) is all that counts in my book.

nextstopCPAParticipantObviously, this thread is for those needing a confidence booster because your GPA has no bearing on how you will perform on the CPA exam. Only would be important right out of college or in seeking an internship and then it would depend on the employer.

undeniabletwins2ParticipantBachelors 2.11 masters 3.73. I had my first child during college and holding down a full time job and i had my twins boys while doing my Masters. Now trying to conquer the CPA . Easier said that done. I usually have a job durong college for 5 years and when i took s new job they asked for my transcripts but my Gpa was not discussed during the interview. As most ppl said before experience is what employers ask about and what you can do based on your job experience and recommendation from previous employers.

AnonymousInactiveThe school really makes a huge difference…. A 4.0 at for example University of Phoenix is not even worth a 2.0 at a prestigious school. College has become a big business. There are tons of “paper mills” out there willing to pass just about anyone who will pay their ridiculous fees for a subpar degree. I've met people with bachelors and masters degrees, who've gone to these type of schools, who I wouldn't trust to make me a ham sandwich let alone perform an audit or complete a tax return. Lacking even a very basic understanding of what it was they majored in. It's a huge reason you have these disgruntled 20-somethings who can't find work because they went to these garbage schools and paid big money for a useless degree.
Sorry to rant but it's just a sad state of affairs…
