We all know you start these threads because OP wants to share their story, so I’ll get it out of the way.

I’m extremely eager to get out of my current job. I started here part-time during college and got offered full time when I graduated. I work as a staff accountant and manage the other people in the office. One of the people under me is dating my boss. That’s caused all sorts of issues. She quit while I was gone for my wedding/honeymoon and I thought all of my problems had been solved. They’ve continued through her friend, whom I hired to take over for the girlfriend.

I just had one of my other employees tell me that I was supposed to get fired when I got back from my honeymoon and he was going to promote the gf or something…I’ve also heard that I was supposed to get fired when my boss gets back from his vacation next week. Overall, it’s a crap situation. I do what I’m told and try to keep my head down and work. I also drive 150 miles round trip for mediocre pay. I had a 2nd interview yesterday and hoping like hell that I’m selected.

Anyway, let’s hear your horrible job situations.

Comparatively my situation wasn't bad at all, but when I was a shy intern in a crowded office I once went 10 working days without speaking to anybody. No one said a word to me, including my supervisor who sat in the cube next to me, for 2 weeks. No “good mornings” or “good nights” or anything. I quickly learned the importance of small talk.

When I quit my last job, I had to get a lawyer involved…so that was pretty bad. I never had a problem there until I told them I was leaving to go to a rival company. That's when things got really ugly really fast. I was trying to do right by my company, and they screwed me over big time. It was a hard – but valuable – lesson to learn!

My current boss has anger issues. His wife also works here and he's screamed at her bad enough for her to come out of his office crying.

I've had a prior boss sexually harass me. BADLY. Still regret never suing him.

My most recent prior experience was with a CPA firm that used to be two firms, merged, then un-merged and lost a lot of work. We were told repeatedly up through the Tuesday before I was let go that there would be no layoffs. 2-3 days later, and I was laid off. Their reason for picking me was that I worked the least OT during tax season. I was deathly ill during tax season and they had the medical records to prove it. Also regret never suing them. (But I found another job that was much closer, had way better benefits, and paid about 30% more.)

But I'd take all that over 150 RT commute (except the harassment). Do you drive? How long does it take? That's insane. My prior job was 16 miles away and I hated the commute, would never want to drive that far again (but might do light rail that far, depending how long it takes).

I was a custodian at a church when I was 16-19. I would come in a few times a week to clean the place with a friend. The amount of disgusting things I had to clean in a place of worship is incredible. I will spare the stories but I learned 2 valuable lessons from that job:

    1. Things are never as clean as they seem.

    2. If I didn't clean it, it is never clean enough. My wife enjoys this quality as I take pride in how clean I make my house and she always asks questions like, “why are you doing that? Oh…that's nasty good call.”

So my story certainly isn't as serious as other posts on here (and incidentally, sorry this crap happened to you all…..it's just awful), but to this day I crack up thinking about how humiliating this was:

I used to work in a mail room a couple years ago where I had the privilege of doing oddball jobs that no one else was willing to do. One day I was volunteered to retrieve a package at another firm located at the other end of the city. If I remember correctly, the temperature that day was 105 degrees (not exaggerating on this). I energetically hoofed it across town naively thinking I was collecting important exhibits for a trial that was going on, all the while sweating my butt off and ruining my nice new–and expensive–dress shirt. I arrived at the reception desk, sheepishly told the receptionist my name and where I was coming from. She sat there a minute with a look of disbelief. I could sense her sympathy for me by the look on her face as she slowly handed me a pretty pink bag.

What was inside you ask? Oh I'll feed you, baby birds…..

    Make up.

That's right. I was a grown man and just spent a half hour of my day walking to another firm in 100+ degree heat to pick up a lawyer's lip stick and eyeshadow.

Funny thing is I actually still work there to this day, but I'm in accounting now. So I guess that's a small victory?

My first accounting job was a full-time tax associate position. I was treated like garbage from day one. One person simply ignored me..yes she pretended i did not exist….no she did not have headphones on or a hearing problem.

I got accused all the time of making mistakes….2/3 of the time i was right….1/3 i was wrong, but each time i was treated like garbage.

The partners yelled at me, my manager waived papers in my face and complained about me so loud I could hear him from across the hall. I had to work 65 hours but I also ordered and picked up all of our dinners, so I spent about 75 hours in the office.

To no surprise I was fired right after the tax deadline. These words can't even describe just how bad my situation was….

Now I am at a family friendly small firm and I am loving it!

Glad other people could share their stories.

I'm not sure what to think now though. My boss just called me up and offered me a 10k raise and now they're going to reimburse me for my mileage.

    @Coloradorit

Off topic, what is your signature referring to for the Colorado requirements. I know they are changing their education requirements and licensing requirements, but how does that affect you losing your CPA credit?

I'm asking because I live in Colorado.

Tcheney, you have to have your completed application in by 6/15 or you have to meet the new requirement (150 hoirs). I don't and I'm not going back to school.

Tuffy, that's great. I'd take it but interview elsewhere, see what's out there. I only had one job where I didn't feel secure for the entire two years I was there except a brief period where i was the only one doing write up work for a major client. Turns out my instincts were right as that was the place that laid me off despite all the promises.

I worked at a civic center in college, doing whatever they needed just to get hours. The worst task was cleaning the parking ramps at 6 AM on the weekend. One of the ramps was the main parking for the bars downtown, so you can imagine what drunk college kids are leaving behind.

my 1st job in US right after I moved here and had maybe 50 English words in my vocabulary. Some temp position that had to do with filing or something. This accountant woman was keep asking if I ever used a computer before. I know some had it worse but it still sucked!
