What to do after a very long employment break?

I worked a tax/ bookkeeping job for about 3 years then had to leave due to a mix of ongoing health problems that I just recently was able to figure out what it is (complicated story) and also helping to take care of a family member at some point. It’s been about 5 years since I worked which I know is terrible, embarassing and I have no idea where to go from here now. I started the cpa tests and I hope to finish them within the next few months which I know doesnt mean much without experience but it’s better than nothing. So my question is does anyone have any advice on where to go from here. I feel like my only way out of this is to go for a masters so that it looks kind of like a ‘clean slate’ which I don’t mind doing but I would like to start working again as soon as I finish the cpa. Any advice on what kind of jobs to look for, what to do, how to explain this during an interview, what to put on my resume? I also feel uncomfortable about explaining during an interview my health problems and dont want them to get the wrong impression that I wont be able to efficiently work or something like that. Anyone else had a large employment gap, how many years was your employment gap and how did you get out of that?

I don't think you're in a bad situation. My recommendation would be to knock out the CPA exams as soon as possible. That way when you explain the long gap in employment, you can also mention that during that time period you also obtained your CPA License.

    REG - 74, Retook 6/10/16, scored a 72 (Hate this exam)
    BEC - 69, 79, 8/1/15
    AUD - 83, 4/4/15
    FAR - 77, 2/27/16
