Job security, the fact that my university has a 100% placement rate for graduating accountants who participated in recruitment week their senior year, its indoor work, with little to no heavy lifting. It can be boring sometimes, and stressful other times, but it has worked out to be a good choice.

i like most people graduated high school in the bad economy (2010) and was told to pick a major. Well accounting still was hiring and my dad was an accountant. Now BAM tax accountant forever and ever.

I would say mainly job security and potential for advancement

I loved my financial accounting class in business school (I know I'm weird. I was just taking the core business classes trying to pick a major).

    Job security, period.

Real question, does anyone actually enjoy getting up and going into their accounting job every day? Or am I the only one who finds it soul crushing? Just curious.

I found public accounting soul crushing. I don't mind my private job at all!

@SaveBandit I enjoy going to work most days. Honestly it depends on what client I am working with that day or week, some are nice, neat and easy. Some are a fun challenge. I do have a few that I am tempted to call in sick rather than try to make sense of their records, but I just suck that up and consider them job security.

knowing that I could get a job without having to move home after college was a huge motivator for me switching to Accounting

@SaveBandit I definitely don't find it soul crushing, but if money didn't matter… I would not be working in accounting 🙂

I was good with numbers (math competition team in highschool 😛 ), good with Excel (I played in Excel…for fun…when I was like 7), liked jobs that never ran out of work (…), and accounting was one of the degrees that I could finish quickest and cheapest. I also liked the fact that there were different options for jobs (public vs. private; I thought there was flexibility for longer vs. shorter hours, but not so sure now), and seemed to be a fairly consistent job market (not booming, but that meant not likely to crash either).

I do truly enjoy accounting work. That being said, I've enjoyed every job I've had, from working in the college cafeteria to retail to being a Controller. The stress and hours of accounting get to me sometimes, but if I could find a lower-stress or lower-hours accounting job, it would be a dream come true. For now, it's a job that is challenging (essential for long-term happiness for me), and the stress is manageable most of the time.

My strongest subject has always been Math. I started out wanting to be a teacher, but that was too stressful for me and the pay was going to be too low. I changed majors to Accounting because it's still Math oriented and higher pay/job security. I genuinely enjoy my job and consider myself to be very good at it. I'm also a problem solver and I chose tax because the law changes more frequently.

Is it bad that I just scrolled through this topic without reading any posts because I was looking for a post from Skynet?

    @TaxGod
Same here, I'm currently gaining experience as a tax accountant at a small CPA firm. Have you tried switching to audit, advisory or other accounting fields?

I have given some thought to it for the near future, but not quite sure the outcome of a lateral career move.

Filled with uncertainty, the treacherous journey has begun.

I took the myers briggs personality assessment and accounting came up on the list. I laughed and said to myself, “yeah right!”. I didn't think I was smart enough. I barely passed high school and had to take basic arithmetic at my community college. Anyways, I signed up for beginner financial accounting just to see and sure enough, decided to major in it. Best decision ever!

Worked at a bank and found that I liked finding and fixing issues with customer accounts. Had always had a thought about accounting as I was good at math and bad in english. Went back to school and managed to land a job as an intern right before graduation which turned into a full time offer for a 25 person CPA firm.

Honestly the only times I don't like it are when the workload is light or I'm having trouble grasping a concept for something I'm doing on an audit.

Having job security was a big must for me as my first child was born right after going back to school and my second a year later. If I ever dislike public I also like the fact that there are so many different opportunities available and I'm not shoehorned into a particular job type.
