For me, it is, the extra food I’m eating that I shouldn’t be eating (health)
The excercise that I am not getting (health)
    Clean house
    Time with family
    Fresh air

@AnAccountant…you are totally right…I don't play victim, I truly do just care too much about stupid things that don't matter…Only thing that helps me is my faith…I literally have to pray every day to stay at peace. I just don't get how people can be so blah.

HAHA! It's not a mess at all! Mentioning real societal issues get people so uncomfortable lol it's hilarious. I'm no victim nor a member of the most marginalized groups in this country and i STILL acknowledge that privilege (color and gender) is very much real. Accounting firms and all financial services look a lot like the 1950's in leadership… and that's real evidence… Ok… back to accounting I guess…

@Tommy – you gotta be kidding me.
It's not mentioning real societal issues that made everyone uncomfortable. Clearylost3772 (formerly known as Roze) stated that she knew a professor who changed fields and immediately assumed that it was because of sexist environment.
I am open to having an educated/intellectual conversations about “real societal issues,” but not w/ someone that makes guesses and jumps to conclusions and gets offended at “college virgin” comment.

LOL @ “formerly known as Roze”!!! @Jombe there was definitely some jumping to conclusions. And Clearylost3772 (formerly known as Roze) isn't my friend. Don't know her from Eve (using context clues to reasonably assume gender). But the reality is that when we bring up sexism and racism in general people shy away. And that's why it remains such an issue. I'm speaking in general… because we're only CPAs. We can maybe fix tax returns but maybe not the world.

But since you'd like to have an educated/intellectual conversation about real societal issues answer this: In your humble opinion, Is racism prevalent in society in general and is there evidence of racism within the accounting industry specifically? I only made it to Senior at a Big 4 but i witnessed insensitive comments and other intentional acts that seemed to be more than coincidences. And disclaimer: my thoughts are my very own and im not trying to offend anyone.

Nobody here is uncomfortable, we just don't understand how she even came to that conclusion.

Regardless, vehemently claiming privilege exists when you aren't a victim in this discussion makes me raise my eyebrows at your authenticity.

    @Tommy,
“Is racism prevalent in society in general and is there evidence of racism within the accounting industry specifically?”

Let me first say I am a Korean American. According to US Census Bureau, Asians made up 5.8% of US population as of July'18, which makes me a minority.

W/ that said, do I believe racism is “prevalent”? Based on my personal experience, I am going to say no. I was born in Missouri. lived in a small town (population of 75) in Indiana for 3 years. Went to college in Indiana as well. Spent 7 years in California and now 3 years @ Colorado. Was I ever discriminated because of my race? Sure, few times here and there through out 30+ years of my life. I've been called a “gook.” I met people that made slanted-eye gestures. I was pushed into a locker for being who I am. For the most part though, I was treated w/ respect from people I met in my personal life and in the accounting industry.

Now, do I believe racism is non-existent? Of course not. I am aware that it happens, but the issue I usually have w/ these kinds of discussion is the generalization. Whether we are talking about racism or sexism, we should talk about it in a specific context. I understand that's not always feasible, but it's usually the “generalization” that makes me uncomfortable.

@ Tommy – when did Isay you are my friend? I'm just saying thanks for saying that this thread isn't a mess…I thought I was the blame for the “mess” since I derailed the topic. Me taking the lady's organizational culture class happened like 6 years ago. I don't remember what she said that made me “assume” that she had negative experiences…I have had negative experiences myself.

Think it goes both ways, my former landlady said her and her friend were trying to get men in the office excited just by the way they stood and posed while looking at papers. And my former manageer had an affair with my former colleague, she actually punched out vacation time for him and her and went to his house where his wife walked in on them…he ended up in divorce, and her husband forgave her…but then that same dude was stopping at my cubicle seeming very interested…People just need to understand what profesisonalism means. That is all…

I know how to earn respect with everyone pretty much…But i can't respect people who make dirty jokes. or just jokes of sexual nature in anyway…Really bothers me. How low can ya sink. I am just from a different culture, and things like that just absolutely baffle me…Accountants are apparently smart aren't they?

If I own a freaken business, I will get to decide who I hire and serve and for whatever reasons I deem important, and you can't call me racist, or sexist or whatever, but when it comes to simply being professional, and knowing where the line is, I will always honor that!

@Jimmy G and The Boys…I care not about your eyebrows. Go study FAR… with love 🙂

@Jombe… Thanks for sharing. It's funny how we tend to ignore evidence. That's why in my very first response on here i capitalized “evidence”. For free: People we meet and know personally more than likely dont have the clout to control or affect institutionalized racism. But hey, in America it's our prerogative to do and believe what we please. That's why so many come to this country. Land of the Free and Home of the Brave!

Ok yall thanks for the conversation. Tommy Out!

my sacrifice was reading through this thread in its entirety.

Thankfully skynet offered a glimmer of entertainment in this otherwise hot mess of a thread.
