We are about to go meet with the architect and engineer for the millionth time, and I’m sure there are going to be a million more to come, but he is asking questions about what I want and where I want it. The problem is that I don’t really know what I want. I know I want a HUGE U-shaped desk with plenty of room and I don’t want people being able to walk behind me and see what is on my computer screens. The computer screens are being mounted on the wall. I’ve searched the internet for ideas but all I get are pictures of some seriously dysfunctional office spaces. They are pretty to look at, but I can’t see me sitting in a clear plastic chair for 14 hours a day with absolutely no paper anywhere, and getting anything done. The building is 40 X 80 but 1/2 of that is going to be storage, conference room, bathroom and kitchen area. My office is already framed in, 18 X 16, and there are tons of plugs and Cat-5 cables on each wall (the perks of sleeping with the electrician). So if you could have anything in your office, what would you want? Dream big!

CPAhereIAm: Yes, that is my dream office!!! Absolutely lovely!

Kricket: All my suggestions have already been given. A chair that is comfortable and allows you to kick back and close your eyes is a key thing for me. Also, a name plate that says Kricket, CPA in enormous letters!

Personally, I think you need to think about how you like to work. You won't need tons of filing cabinet space if you like things electronically instead of paper copy. Or if you work with an assistant who will maintain all your files.

We have the big screens in each office here (the managers do) and that's great for an informal meeting, however the waist to ceiling high windows at the front of each office facing into the cube farm means that everything posted on those computer monitors is within view of everyone in the office. So if confidentiality is a concern you need to consider that.

The only thing I can really add to the above is think about getting a couple of your outlets set at the desk level. So many times they are all low or on the floor – and you may want to be able to plug something in from your desk that you don't have to crawl under to get plugged in! LOL

FAR: 5/12/16... and if I don't die from an anxiety attack...
    AUD: 7/8/16
    REG: 8/25/16
    BEC: 11/3/16

The standup desks are awesome. I cannot wait to have that again.

If you do go that route, you will also need a step stool and some supportive shoes.

I have no idea what a stand up desk is, but after tearing both ACL's in college at the same time, I doubt I'll want one of those! 🙂

The door was already priority #1. I actually have those already purchased. I found what I wanted on sale, so I bought them.

I love idea of built in speakers! That was awesome!

I agree with the fluorescent lights. I absolutely hate those. So we are going with regular light fixtures for the most part and recessed can lights in the offices with LED bulbs everywhere. If I have to pay a note on this building, I don't want to worry with replacing light bulbs any time soon. I might as well include them in the cost of the building.

Carpet is a must. This building is old! In fact, it was originally the first hardware store in town, so we are able to get by without doing some things that would be required on new construction. Besides, I don't think my knees would appreciate concrete all day long.

The bar is taken care of with a full kitchen, albeit a small one. No one is cooking Thanksgiving dinner there, but I can at least have a hot meal during tax season.

All of the shelves and desks are going to be built in so no worries with anything falling over.

Two bathrooms (fire marshal won't budge on that one because of the size of the building) and the ladies is right across from my office!

There are going to be more plugs in that building than necessary, and most of them will be desk height along with the CAT5 and phone jacks (which are nothing more than a CAT5 with a smaller connector).

I found this picture waiting on me when I got home and I am sooooo excited and sooooo ready to get this over with!!! Architect says that this is the very, very, very preliminary drawing and that things will probably change, but the walls will pretty much stay where he has them.

The office in the back, “MCE Office” and “MCE Storage”, are actually for my husband's business. Of course, the “storage” is really nothing more than a man cave with the pool table and the bar. If I can talk him into a wine fridge, I'll be the happiest little CPA in the world!

OMG!! Is this really happening? One year ago, I was convinced that I had failed FAR and wouldn't even check my own score! All I need is for the doctor to tell me tomorrow that my tumor marker is at zero and someone is going to need a jackhammer to get the smile off of my face.

Oddly enough my dream setup is a 2 person shop my future wife and myself working in a small office or from home.

I once had a standing desk and I enjoyed it actually. Anyone want the treadmill desk? I think I'll pass.
