What is your dream office?

We are about to go meet with the architect and engineer for the millionth time, and I’m sure there are going to be a million more to come, but he is asking questions about what I want and where I want it. The problem is that I don’t really know what I want. I know I want a HUGE U-shaped desk with plenty of room and I don’t want people being able to walk behind me and see what is on my computer screens. The computer screens are being mounted on the wall. I’ve searched the internet for ideas but all I get are pictures of some seriously dysfunctional office spaces. They are pretty to look at, but I can’t see me sitting in a clear plastic chair for 14 hours a day with absolutely no paper anywhere, and getting anything done. The building is 40 X 80 but 1/2 of that is going to be storage, conference room, bathroom and kitchen area. My office is already framed in, 18 X 16, and there are tons of plugs and Cat-5 cables on each wall (the perks of sleeping with the electrician). So if you could have anything in your office, what would you want? Dream big!

I would work in a glass dome in the middle of a very green luscious forest with a stream outside.

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"

I think it's very important to have a table and chairs seperate from your desk that others can bring in paperwork, a notebook or laptop and not invade your personal desk/space.

A window with a view is nice of course (my last view was a life sized statue of the Virgin Mary. Nice, but 50 hours a week of staring at her either makes you feel guilty or shunned!)

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.

Well I certainly didn't need to be there for that meeting! But oh well. All the engineer wanted to talk about was where the light fixtures were going and what kind they were going to be. I just looked at my husband and said “Ask him.” And the architect kept asking me about the desks. We are doing built in's instead of buying desks because in the long run it's cheaper. How many drawers and filing cabinets are the ideal number? The only thing I'm certain of is that the top is going to be wider than any desk I can buy and have an edge around it so papers can't fall off. Hubby dearest is breaking out his cabinet making skills and tools so I'm sure I will pay for them twice before it's all done. 😉

@mla1169, I definitely made space for a separate table in my office. Security is a concern and so is privacy. The windows are 24″ X 24″ and there are 3 in each office but they are pretty high on the wall. The ceilings are 12′ so the windows will let in light but not allow anyone to easily see inside. I hate blinds with a passion so these windows were perfect. There isn't going to be much of a view anyway. And I'm certainly not going to put a massive Virgin Mary in the parking lot!

Well since I've been a manager I've been in a cubicle because when they designed our building they basically only made enough offices for executives. So my answer is simple, “a door”. 🙂

Kricket – here are my suggestion.

    1) Speakers in the walls to avoid speakers on the desk.

    2) Mounted TV to watch the market, or just take a break.

    3) Place for a minifridge in the office.

    4) A small bar. 😉

    5) LED lighting. I hate the buzzing sound of the halogen fixtures. Plus, provides better lighting.

    6) Built in book shelves! Mine has fallen over a few times due to all the files.

    7) A standing desk in the office as well.

    8) Absolutely no carpet, go stained cement if you can.

    9) Personal bathroom would be great as well, but not not a high priority.

    CPA EXAM: DONE!!!!
    Ethics Course: Passed
    Application Mailed: 3/16/15
    Professional Conduct Exam: 97
    Certification Date: 4/2/15!!!
