What changed after you got the CPA that wouldn’t have happened had you not obtained the CPA? How did your life change?

Do colleagues/boss/peers treat you with more respect?

Did you get a promotion/raise/job that you wouldn’t had?

How long did it take to start feeling the benefits?

Did you expect more or less recognition?

Did it change your life for the better or was it not as beneficial as you thought it would be?

Not much will change for me… still planning to stick with the state job after reading all the horror stories about private industry.

A few of my friends worked for CPA firms for about 2.5 years, got their CPA licenses, and found new jobs as accounting managers working for privately held companies so not sure if there are a lot of other benefits coming with that apart from the actual title.

    FAR: 81 (May 2013)
    BEC: 81 (July 2013)
    REG: 83 (August 2013)
    AUD: 82 (November 2013)
    California CPA since 1/30/14

I haven't obtained my CPA yet but it has already opened up opportunity where I am at. I was able to work out a short-term assignment at another project operated by the same company. That assignment may lead to a new job potentially. I was also able to negotiate a raise earlier this year and my boss has already mentioned there will be more to come. It certainly helps as it is something he will bring up with senior level staff at various times and is very happy that I'm going for my CPA. I don't work in public accounting and will be the only CPA where I am currently working. It's not just personal growth but will bring value to the company as a whole. It definitely feel it has been worth all the time I have invested in this crazy exam!

What is your state job Kitty? You keep talking about it but I am interested to know what it is.

Excellent post, mla1169. No one treats you differently. Becoming a CPA was a personal goal for me, not an expectation of a red carpet rolling out.

The best thing about getting my actual license is having my life back. All the time and anxiety of studying is behind me. I am interested in getting a CMA, CFE, or CIA license, but I may hold until I go one of those directions in my career. Turns out, more letters means more CPE and fees to pay.

I am job hunting so having those three letters after my name does help (or at least I hope it will.) So far, it has not meant more money, but I think it will over my career.

The very best part is seeing the happiness in my husband's eyes and watching the CPA exam ball and chain disappear instantly. The relief is palpable for me… And for him also. I feel 10 pounds lighter!
