Waiting on the check out line and couple of young ladys was talking about their job. One was working in healthcare and the other one was in public accounting. I was was not surpriesed how much complaining to her friend about working in public accounting. She says the hours are crazy and ridiculous. Some clients are pain in the ass that it makes your blood pressure boiled. The best complain she said would be time reports. Every time she hands in the time report there always a question like you spend this much time on these client? Did you forget any other clients? She further questions why does gov’t work forty hours a week and we work this crazy hours. After all this i had to jump in and say I totally agree on what you say and we both laugh. she says that why there is such a high turnover rate. nobody want to deal with this craziness and people are starting to see that accounting is overrated and that why accounting firms have to promote this profession in college when you do not see that in other industry. She finally close with do not go public accounting if you donot have too.

But if I wanted a government job with a lot of pay in accounting, I would definitely go for the SEC:

Everyone is making over $150k. Average is around $175k it looks like.

Didn't mean to offend you at all, but a lot of people (not saying you) think federal workers don't earn much because they are civil servants. And they don't want you to think otherwise as it would bring up bigger issues with how the government spends its money. But federal pay in a lot of sectors such as accounting has outpaced the private industry for a long time.

Well we had a man come speak to us at an accounting society meeting who worked in an accounting position for a car rental company. His job was kind of an entrepreneurial position and he said he normally works under 40 hours a week and he makes seven figures.

I work for an IT company and the financial directors make 6 figures and they work 8 to 5 and get plenty of vacation time since they have been there so long. Month end closings aren't too bad either…may work 45-50 hours that particular week. So I guess it just depends where you go work…public accounting isn't the only place you have the potential to make that kind of money.

A couple years ago when the government shut down, there was an article published on Yahoo and it quoted one Federal worker saying how because of the shut down she's going to have trouble paying her electric bills since paychecks would be delayed by at least a week. Well her name was published on the article and of course people looked up her pay. She was making over $165k per year lol.
