Just getting a feel how many of us are out there. I’ll start next week and I think I’ll start with the virtual prep first before meeting clients. Has there been any issue with the new TaxSlayer program? My instructor said it’s been a learning experience for everyone since it’s new.

I am starting this weekend with orientation. I've never filed income tax return nor used any tax software, so I am very nervous.

FWIW, I really like it when I interview a job candidate who's done the VITA thing. You won't get to do that many returns. But the experience will be great.

Hey guys! How are y'all holding up? It's been pretty good so far. Haven't had any crazy clients but I only go twice a week.

I don't do it anymore. I enjoyed it a lot, the couple years that I participated. But, I and some other volunteers who worked with me felt that too many people were coming in and asking us to aid and abet their cheating. It was so f***ing annoying to sit down with someone, get all their data, enter it into Taxwise (I guess they're not using that anymore?) and then after the refund/owe dollar values are generated, they say “That's too low, I should be getting more back, don't file it please.”

Had one guy come in this year. He had a Sched C last year showing losses for a business he runs.
Talking to him, you could tell he made under the table money. Alarm bells went off. Had the site coordinator come over and just give a second look see.. SC says no dice, smells funky. SC tell him that we cannot do it, he flips out, curses at us and says he' going to H&R Block.
I work in a really poor neighborhood, and most of the people really need the help. Always will find the greaseballs

Typical. I had the same kind of thing happen on at least 3 occasions in 2015, which was the last year I did VITA. One guy came in with a 1099 indicating $51,000 of gambling winnings. He was using a motorized scooter because he was disabled. We didn't even calculate his return because before we even sat down with him to start going over his info, he said “I'll tell you right now, I am not going to pay any money. I'm disabled, as you can see, and I shouldn't have to pay.” Site coordinator said “We can't work with you, sir. Please seek other advice for completing your tax return.”

I had a number of Schedule C returns too. I remember getting all the way to the end with one lady and the return amount from fed was $4,100. Then she pulled out a scrap of paper out of her purse and said, “Wrong. It's $4,700.” I asked her where she got that figure and she said a friend gave it to her. I smiled and said “Well why didn't your friend just file your return for you? You came here, presumably with the intent of us filing it for you.” She said “oh, he would've wanted about a hundred bucks out of me if I'd had him file it and I really didn't want to pay him.” I said, “Well, if you want $4,700, you'd better pay him that hundred dollars.” She left in a huff.

Oddly enough, this VITA site was in an upscale neighborhood….yet we still got plenty of very low income folks in the door.

I wish I passed REG in November so I could have signed up for VITA. Would have been nice to help people out and put something accounting related on my resume.

    FAR: 75 Roger & Ninja (notes/flashcards/audio/MCQ)
    AUD: 73, 81
    BEC: 71, retake 8/29

Since the introduction of self prepared software like Turbotax, everybody could be a tax preparer and tax preparation industry is getting out of control after Loving vs IRS court case. It prevents IRS from regulating tax preparers and the Registered Tax Return Preparer exam is discontinued as a result. Right now the IRS has Annual Filing Season Program (AFSP) in place which is “VOLUNTARY”, basically no credential is needed to do taxes.

The preparer with the most bogus deductions gets the most clients. You will never get consistency tax return with 1099 MISC (Schedule C) from a preparer to another. Heck, I even came across Schedule C on taxpayer with only W2s.

The most memorable incident I had was with this married client (has been living with spouse) coming in with about $80,000 (1099 K) business income, she has a couple children. She just told me that she wanted the result to be Head of Household status for both husband and wife. Her spouse, and children are also her 1099 MISC “contractors”, and everybody income should be eligible for Medicaid. She told me that in previous years she had been going to this place and they had been doing this for her. I asked why didn't she go back, she responded that they “MESSED” up her tax return related to 1095-A because she DIDN'T bring that form with her. Then I asked her “okay, do you have any paperwork to support your claims for this year”, she responded “what paperwork? last year they DIDN'T ask me for any paperwork”. And this is one of the reasons I am giving up my tax business, going for MLO license now.
