I just need to vent to people who understand my woes. I listen to classical music while studying, as the singing in normal songs distracts me from reading/thinking about a question. I have been studying since May, meaning that I have been listening to boring music for 4.5 months. The past few weeks (especially since I started studying AUD), I have been in a weird funk where I have a hard time focusing and concentrating on the material. I also have lost a ton of motivation that I had studying REG and FAR.

This morning I was getting ready to sit down to study when I watched a video on people’s reactions to hearing My Chemical Romance songs (on Facebook of course) and had the strongest yearning to listen to their music instead of the classical music. So, as a way to make myself happier, I put it on and started an AUD homework. At first, I was doing pretty well and figured that maybe the music wasn’t interfering as much as I had expected… Then it all went downhill and I got halfway through the homework and had scored a 53% (the lowest score I have ever had in any topic on any exam thus far). I literally just started crying because I was so upset that I couldn’t enjoy something as simple as listening to some good music while studying.

I hate this exam process so much, it has turned me from a once cheery person to an emotional wreck. I pray this is all over in November.

Thanks for always being here, fellow future CPAs. I appreciate the support you all show one another!

I get some sort of sick pleasure from revisiting the forums and seeing everyone's pain! I'm kidding =) Once all of you get past this you will NEVER have to deal with it again! Do everything you can to avoid prolonging this process.

    @taayllorr
YES! Tycho and similar music like Bonobo is great.

Oh I am so sorry, @reallytired! I can totally relate to the emotion wreck and lack of concentration, I have become this too. I wouldn't say I am a particularly “cheery” person, I am pretty even keel and am normally not emotional at all but since starting the exam I am always “on edge” and I have had numerous emotional breakdowns during studying. I often feel like I have started to spiral out of control…I'm also normally a very healthy eater and I exercise frequently but I haven't done any of that since last November when I started studying for the exam….I feel like I've given up so much of my life and I just want my normal life back!

Looks like you are getting closer to being finished (hoping for a good REG score for you come 9/20)! Keep plugging away, we're all cheering for you!

P.S. I'm a “needs-to-be-silent-while-I-study” type person so I have expropriated my dad's noise cancelling hunting headphones/ear muffs/whatever you call them which seems to help with my easily distracted brain and the noise level in my house 🙂

For those that do like ambient noise, calm.com is good for when it's too quiet or you're trying to block something out.

I can tell you that some instrumental music is the most non-boring stuff around.

    EDM
    Jamtronica
    Afrobeat
    Several genres of jazz

Some bands you might want to check out:

    Vinyl (out of San Francisco)
    Lettuce
    Soulive
    The New Mastersounds
    The JBs
    Jungle Fire

That's off the top of my head. I've been on a soundcloud kick DJ kick lately, so I'm a little out of touch with some of the instrumental stuff I used to play on the regular. Worth exploring anyway.

Hope you have good news on that score release! As far as study tunes I actually spent a few weeks using Binaural audio tracks from Youtube. It's meant to be played through headphones and is essentially a low hum/white noise that plays a slightly different tone in each ear causing a rhythmic drone. They have different frequency ranges for different types of activity. I'm not all that convinced on the science of it, but it seemed to help keep me from getting distracted. Drives the GF nuts though, so YMMV 😛
