I have been applying jobs on my own everywhere. I got no response, no interview.

My experience is:
two tax seasons with tax prep company
Private accounting: 1 year A/P, 1 year A/R

My license and designation:
CPA
Enrolled Agent

I recently contacted this “outgoing” recruiter for a job opportunity. He told me that if I see any ideal job posting, do not apply myself and let him know so he could market. Is this wise to do?

I am thinking to be a Quickbook certified to increase marketability. Any tip and advice is welcome.

Recruiters are very helpful as long as you use them wisely. Best way to see if he/she is well connected is 1) hes been doing it awhile so maybe if he has a linkedin and it shows and he has connections there 2) he sounds like he knows your industry/profession well

I left for a different job using a recruiter, they offer help on resume building and also helps with giving you the job openings that arent simply on those basis job boards like indeed etc.. So they do help alot BUT you have to use them wisely/ask alot of questions and ultimately you need to feel comfortable with them. Also a good recruiter most likely has linkedin nowadays since it is a very good tool (when used properly) to network.

A good example is, if this recruiter is simply a “new recruiter”…..if you look in their linkedin and they have 4 months of experience and prior to that they did something completely different…so i wouldnt be so comfortable “trusting” that recruiter with my career outlook (but who knows)

Many companies use recruiters to do their dirty work — market openings, filter applicant pools (occasionally including performing background/reference checks). Thus, unless you use one or more recruiters, your chances of getting the job are poor.

That said, recruiters should only supplement your job search; they’re fairly expensive (the company hiring pays the fee) and many companies — both large and small — don’t feel a need to pay their fees.

Also, recruiters will pressure you to take a job so they can collect their commission. For example, this past fall a recruiter contacted me via LinkedIn and I accepted his request to interview with a competing firm — I liked the firm but their best offer was a $18K payout plus two fewer weeks of PTO. Naturally I rejected it but the recruiter grew upset, telling me I wasted everyone’s time, etc. Obviously you’re not in this situation but others may be.
