Tips for doing computational mcq's for FAR

I started studying for FAR a little over a week ago and haven’t been doing so great on computational mcq’s. I’m not really focusing a whole lot on them since I’m trying to get through all the Roger videos, but I try and do about 10 after completing each section. So far I’m averaging in the 60 range and most of my incorrect answers are from computational mcq’s. I plan on giving myself at least 3 weeks for review and will do mostly ninja mcq and sims during that time.

Whenever I see a long problem with a bunch of numbers I freeze like a deer in headlights lol. I know Roger says read the last sentence first when you see numbers in the question. My advanced accounting professor used to tell us to write out the fact pattern as we read through the problem so it’s easier to refer back to. Does anyone have any other tips on how to go about doing them?

    AUD: 73, 81
    BEC: 71, retake 8/29

If you only just started studying, averaging in the 60s is actually quite good. That being said, I tried to write out any JE that would be related to the computational problems, whether or not the question called for it. It helped me to learn the material better.

    FAR | 81 - July 21 15
    REG | 66 - Oct 1 15 | 87 - Jan 7 16
    AUD | 90 - Oct 29 15
    BEC | 86 - Nov 25 15

    1. Focus on the root of the question. Ignore the big paragraph with all the data as most of it won't be used.
    2. Journal entries AND balancing are your friend. Be ware some entries are plug, meaning whatever is remaining to balance is the amount.
    3. Don't freak. Know concepts & remember the questions are so much shorter on the exam then study materials. (Can be any information though so have a good broad understanding of it all)

    FAR - 78
    AUD - 82
    REG - 79
    BEC - 78

Study Materials: Becker Self Study, NINJA Notes, NINJA MCQ for review

Thanks, but those numbers are somewhat inflated since some of the questions are repeats of class questions he does in the lectures lol. I noticed a lot of people say the same thing about writing out the J/E for each problem. Next section I'll be doing is bonds and that should definitely help with that topic.

RE2PECT – I totally agree with you. Some of the Roger multiple choice are a repeat of this Class Questions. But I think it is good practice to redo those anyway. Anyway, I am using Roger for FAR too. I've read around and people write that his practice questions are not “as challenging” since he moved away from the Wiley Test Bank. Therefore, just to be on the safe side, I'm going to purchase the FAR Wiley Test Bank only.

Has anyone here had success with the Roger for FAR and using the Wiley TB?

I use Roger and will be taking FAR next week. I use Ninja MCQs as a supplement for my final review. Ninja is more challenging than Roger's IPQs for sure but a tougher test bank might become overwhelming if you don't get the basics down first. Roger's IPQs and repeat questions are great for that purpose.

My advice would be to stick with Roger for the first pass and do your second pass with a tougher test bank such as Wiley or Ninja. FAR will start making more sense when you are about 60% complete (trust me). I would not worry about my test scores at this point and keep moving forward.

    Hope these help.
