Tim Gearty's use of the word "again" — unintentional or anchor word? - Page 6

I see on here quite a bit that people are annoyed with Tim Gearty’s repeated use of the word “again”. The funny thing is that I barely noticed until other people mentioned it — now I can’t get it out of my head!

Yes it’s annoying and people think he just has speaking issues, but maybe it’s by design. In psychology and neuro-linguistic programming there is a concept called “anchoring”:

    Quote:
How does NLP anchoring work? (

Ever heard of Russian physiologist & psychologist Ivan Pavlov? He is most well known for his findings on human and animal conditioning. While doing a research on dogs’ digestion, he discovered this phenomenon. When it came to meal time, Pavlov would use bells to call his dogs to the food. After repeating this numerous times, he found that even without any food, the dogs would salivate from hearing the sound of the bell.

By doing so, Pavlov associated the ringing sound of the bell to food. And the numerous repetitions have conditioned the dogs to respond to the ringing bell just like how they respond to food.

This is how NLP anchoring works. By conditioning responses to unique NLP anchors, we are able to deliberately get into specific states just by triggering the unique NLP anchor. Just like Pavlov’s dogs.

So NLP anchors are really a stimulus for us to get into whatever states we want. Similarly as Pavlov uses the ringing bell sound to act as a stimulus, with NLP anchoring, we can set certain anchors to act as the stimulus to certain states. And after many repetitions, the association between the NLP anchor and the state will be conditioned.

    […]

Number of repetitions – Naturally the more repetitions you make, the more conditioned the anchor becomes. So make sure you do enough repetitions to make it conditioned.

I can’t help but wonder. He comes off as a really bright guy; I find it hard to believe that it’s because his vocabulary is limited. Thoughts?

Tim absolutely drove me nuts with his repetition of “again.” It broke my heart when I got to AUD (my final exam) and Peter Olinto was nowhere to be seen.

    REG (7/1/13) 94
    FAR (8/2/13) 98
    BEC (8/23/13) 97
    AUD (10/4/13) 99

    Ethics (1/14/14) 100

    I'm free!!

No doubt, AUD was rough. I remember my first time through FAR, I looked ahead to all the video sections to see how many had Gearty vs. Olinto. I've got to be careful with my critiques of Gearty because when I really start to share my feelings, my posts tend to be deleted and threads get closed, but suffice to say, the only exam sections I failed were the ones where Gearty presented the majority of topics. You do the math.

    ✓ AUD: (02/12/13) 71 | (05/31/13) 80
    ✓ REG: (05/13/13) 75
✓ BEC: (08/06/13) 80 - Unwilling participant in the "Server Upgrade" debacle
    ✓ FAR: (08/31/13) 65 | (12/06/13) 75 - Beat the Cali Education Requirement
    ✓ PETH: (12/25/13) 86 | (12/26/13) 92
    ✓ CA CPA: (02/13/14)

How about the fact that Gearty speaks a different word than one that is written in the book even though there is a material difference? You know he is aware that he just said the wrong word on accident but yet is too lazy to reshoot that piece of the film. I don't doubt that he is probably a financial whiz, but this guy drives me crazy with his sloooooooow, boring, highlight the whole book approach.

It's something I never noticed when going through FAR, but it's impossible to ignore now that I'm aware of it. I go through lectures with subtitles on, so I can see the “again”s coming and have to try to brace for impact.

    FAR: May 1st, 2014 - 91
    AUD: May 29th, 2014 - 97!
    BEC: July 16th, 2014 - 91
    REG: August 29th, 2014 - 88

Have not really noticed Tim use “again” at all, hmm lets see when I take FAR. I like Peter, BEC was pretty fun with him, wish he could also do the IT section instead of that other noob.

BEC: 5/21/14 82! PASSED HALF WAY THERE!
    FAR: 4/2/15 80! Almost there!
    AUD: 69, 74, 4/3/14 81! PASSED
    REG: TBD

I am studying AUD now and never noticed Gearty's overuse of the word “again” but I'm sure I will now.

My favorite Gearty-ism is the way he repeatedly pronounces substantive as though it is a four-syllable word. When he says that word, I always hear sub-stan-ta-tive. He has to know that is not the way that word is pronounced. I think he is just messing with us.

    BEC - 88
    AUD - 74, 87
    REG - 77
    FAR - 63, 82

    CIA certified in 2013

It blows my mind that there are people out there that didn't notice it. He literally will say it twice a sentance for hours on end. It's painful!
