Tim Gearty's use of the word "again" — unintentional or anchor word? - Page 2

I see on here quite a bit that people are annoyed with Tim Gearty’s repeated use of the word “again”. The funny thing is that I barely noticed until other people mentioned it — now I can’t get it out of my head!

Yes it’s annoying and people think he just has speaking issues, but maybe it’s by design. In psychology and neuro-linguistic programming there is a concept called “anchoring”:

    Quote:
How does NLP anchoring work? (

Ever heard of Russian physiologist & psychologist Ivan Pavlov? He is most well known for his findings on human and animal conditioning. While doing a research on dogs’ digestion, he discovered this phenomenon. When it came to meal time, Pavlov would use bells to call his dogs to the food. After repeating this numerous times, he found that even without any food, the dogs would salivate from hearing the sound of the bell.

By doing so, Pavlov associated the ringing sound of the bell to food. And the numerous repetitions have conditioned the dogs to respond to the ringing bell just like how they respond to food.

This is how NLP anchoring works. By conditioning responses to unique NLP anchors, we are able to deliberately get into specific states just by triggering the unique NLP anchor. Just like Pavlov’s dogs.

So NLP anchors are really a stimulus for us to get into whatever states we want. Similarly as Pavlov uses the ringing bell sound to act as a stimulus, with NLP anchoring, we can set certain anchors to act as the stimulus to certain states. And after many repetitions, the association between the NLP anchor and the state will be conditioned.

    […]

Number of repetitions – Naturally the more repetitions you make, the more conditioned the anchor becomes. So make sure you do enough repetitions to make it conditioned.

I can’t help but wonder. He comes off as a really bright guy; I find it hard to believe that it’s because his vocabulary is limited. Thoughts?

I guess it's just me, but I really don't mind Tim Gearty. However, from now on, I will become irritated with his use of ‘again' since I'll notice it… haha.

Oh, this is funny! I find Gearty's use of word ‘again' as refreshing, as in taking a pause to contemplate. It is interesting of how people perceive same thing as totally different.

NOW, skipping the part of text or not fully explaining difficult concepts, that's what gets me. I'm paying for a review and still must search & research subjects on my own, that sucks. But, as i just recently posted, my experience with FAR test is that test is not in depth but rather broad in coverage.

Over the last few days of studying FAR, I have spent more time in front of the computer staring at Gearty than I would like to admit (or ever do again for that matter) and Eureka! I just figured it out!

Gearty's incessant use of the word “again” has nothing to do with a verbal tic, an anchor word, or evidence of a poor command of the English language. It does, however, prove that he has actually planned ahead and expects that we will watch his videos more than once. He cleverly uses the word “again” over and over again to remind us on our subsequent viewings that we have heard it all before. The man is pure genius!

Olinto on the other hand doesn't use the word “again” repetetively which leads me to believe that he expects students to watch his lectures only one time. To that I ask, “Why would anyone in his right mind only watch these lectures just once?” For the money I forked over, I'm considering surprising my friends with a “movie night” and you know just what will be playing.

OK. I've clearly been at this too long. Good luck to everyone going through this with me…

@g.rosen That is pretty funny. You are probably right. 🙂

I've never really thought anything about him saying “again” so often. Now I fear watching the videos again because that is probably the only thing I will notice.

I appreciate your interesting hypothesis. However, I think it is simply a word whisker that is part of his verbal approach. I have observed quite a few people exclaim “again” with no real purpose, other than serving as a word whisker. Possibly he's is collecting his thoughts, trying to keep his energy consistent, or maybe Tim simply has stage anxiety. Either way, I think he does a good job with the course.
