Pros and cons to dating co-workers?

Especially at larger firms, you have the opportunity to meet many different people in different departments that you share interests with and can get to know really well going on lunch or even working together.

Do you think it is a bad idea? Great idea? Is it against most company policies?

Please share thoughts and experiences, thanks!

    Christmas Party conversations starts with…..

    “You bring the Spiked Eggnog”

    “I'll bring the handcuffs”

” Bring your kids to work day” might be a little awkward.

“Daddy, can we go see mom? She's just two cubicles over.”

Met my wife while we were both working at the same firm. There were probably 150 accountants at the firm. She was in Tax & I was in Audit. It didn't bother me or her, but there will be gossip. Best story from my experience, my wife (GF at the time) walked out of my cube as the managing audit partner walked in. “You hittin' that?” Quote from a 50 year old dad was hilarious.

I met my girlfriend of 4 years (soon to be fiancé) at the Restauran we both worked at. It caused stress at the time for sure but that was a temp job essentially.

I know of some couples in my big 4. One is married couple one of which is an audit manager and the other a tax senior. Zero problems for them as they truly never work together or even see each other for that matter while at work.

Other couple was a senior manager and senior who worked together. That was an HR mess and scheduling had to be done carefully so they didn't work together. Things got awkward around the office and the relationship didn't last. They are still weird around each other to this day and the sm isn't even in our office anymore.

My best advice is it will be fine if you are truly diff departments if you don't mind a little gossip. If you work together, I'm not sure I'd go there for anything long term.
