Therapeutic for those unmotivated

    I’ve been unmotivated for the past… it’s been way too long, lets just say that..

    So, i’m typing out a list of sorts (things, people, blogs, etc.) that I’ve experienced that have jump-started my never-ending quest on this journey to become a CPA. Mind you, this brain has been jump-started so much it really should be fried!

    Honestly, it’s therapeutic (for me, anyway).

    My top 5 motivators:

    5) Leadership programs for only the younger licensed generation (okay, it’s bad when your firm would like to sponsor you, but you still have yet to pass…ouch)

    4) Seniors in college who are sitting and passing parts or all of the exam. Our firm puts on a Q & A for college students to ask those in industry or public accounting questions that they have – and it kills me to know that it’s starting to become common for those recent graduates to have already taken and passed parts of the exam! (okay, maybe this is already common, and it’s just me. – but, seriously… that’s impressive.)

    3) Those curiosity cats… Ok, just when you think you were able to reason with yourself that everything is going to be okay…someone asks you out of the blue – “have you passed any sections?” or “how’d the exam go last month”. BUT, what kills me the most is when you walk into your annual review with your bosses and they bring it up… and yes, i’ll admit i’ve gone to TWO annual reviews where they have brought it up!

    2) Interns passing parts or all of the exam when you’re their in-charge or supervisor on jobs. Seriously, to me that’s just embarrassing! and.. yes, recently i’ve been embarrassed.

    1) Busy mommies and daddies who find time to study and pass the exam. You have to admit that when you read blogs of those who are married with 2 kids, full time job and still be able to find time to study and pass the exam – that you really should have absolutely no excuses! It’s even worse when you read their a single parent – ugh!

    Do you feel the motivation?

    Okay, now you try. πŸ™‚

    @saucesah, Great post, you've motivated me alright πŸ™‚

    While I got tons of excuses (who doesn't?!), at the end of the day, seeing former classmates and young recent graduates passing or at least attempting this exam, I decided to partake in this process for various reasons like the job security, further promotions, better options and so on. It does not make sense to sit back and watch others succeeding, gotta do something about it!

    Bwt, have you decided to take exam or still in debating about it stage? As somebody posted in this forum earlier, the elephant can be eaten one bite at a time!

    For me it was sitting down for an annual review and being told that the only thing that would prevent me from getting promoted the following year was that I did not have my CPA license. That meeting was July 16 last year. 291 days later I received my last passing score.

    I also experienced the embarrassment of newbies coming into the firm with the exam already passed. It's not fun admitting to someone 4 years under you that you're still working on the exam.

    But now I'm just waiting on my license!! Just remember, it will be worth it in the end!!!!!

    Congrats! How'd BEC go for you? I'm taking it Wednesday. Unfortunately I hope to be one of those “Newbies” that come into the firm with all 4 sections passed. Pending a passing FAR score and my performance on BEC that could be a reality. I'm humble though. I haven't told any of my friends or family that I actually got a perfect score on Audit.

    @SeattleAccountant

    I actually have taken REG 3x's with the closes score to passing being a 68. Audit – 65 and FAR – not even on the radar.

    Anyway, i've just fallen off and jumped back on the wagon one too many times.

    @K917, i feel ya! I'm so happy for you that you can go back to your next annual review and know there's a promotion waiting… Picturing it now, I think i'd moonwalk my way in just for fun. I think i'm at that point – but my bosses are pretty nice people and probably have been sugar coating the whole “you need to pass before we can promote you”. EEK! maybe they'll get fed up and just straight out tell me – i probably need that.

    Some people just need the band-aid to be ripped off… and i think i'm one of those.

    @bcjasper09 – don't get me wrong – I don't have nothing but happiness for those who are in any of those that made my top 5 motivators list. Really, they should be proud – including you. You guys are helping out others, without even knowing it. And really, i'm glad you closed with you nearly got a perfect score on AUD- because lets just say, i'm truly motivated now. πŸ™‚

    Thanks all for replies. I really do appreciate to hear others have been in the same boat.

    @saucesah,

    Ouch with the Band-Aid thing!

    Well, at times we all need this kind of hurtful love.

    Not nearly perfect 99 is PERFECT. Damn newbies πŸ˜‰ KIDDING! Congratulations bdjasper, you're wise to be the newbie that gets it done before the reality of the real world sets in!

    I like your motivation list saucesah. The promotion thing is a motivator for me. My company is growing and I want to set myself up for a natural promotion instead of them having to hire over me in a year or two. I just hope it works!

    Then of course, it's the need for complete independence (I never want to have to depend on someone to help me take care of my daughter). I want to finally finish something I start, and it's important to me that I make my mom proud.

    My daughter was too young to understand what was going on when I first started studying (back in Oct 2011). But now she gets it. She is my biggest cheerleader! She now refers to the test as ‘our' test. She is so excited that we will pass our test! I told her she's right, a passing grade is just as much hers as it is mine, because the only reason I can study so hard is because she is such a good child. πŸ™‚
