I’ve researched this and there doesn’t seem to be a definitive answer. Some get two research questions and pass, some get two and fail. Some swear one is pretest, some swear 2nd is not a pretest. Does anyone know for sure or is this another aicpa mystery that we will never really know the answer?

Not a mystery at all, it is explained in the aicpa rules. You only get 1 research question that is scored; if you got 2, it means one of them was a pre-test. Now, whether you've passed or not has no correlation to the number of research questions you've had.
