Tax preparation question

I wanted to start preparing taxes for local small businesses. I know these guys don’t have any good book keeping going on because they’re really small. The old tax preparer took their bank statements and produced P&L from them. Basically, my question is, what is a good way for me to get the level of detail I need from these companies to properly do their taxes? I was thinking using Quickbooks accountant and perform book keeping for them. Any other suggestions?

Bookkeeping takes a lot of time and they won't want to pay you for what it's actually worth. Try getting them on Online Quickbooks and connect their bank accounts. So the transactions automatically flow through to the Quickbooks account, they only have to accept them and tell the program where to code them. After a while it becomes very efficient. You get an accountant log in and pull reports for the tax return.

    agree with littlerobbort,

some people may not like online quickbooks first time, but it is pretty efficient and time-saving once quickbooks memorize the transactions and coding.
