It seems to me that financial reporting accounting and auditing arent my cup of tea, do you think I’ll like tax? ive taken a couple tax courses in college..they weren’t too bad

It may be – hard to say till you try. Could you get all your friends and family to give you their taxes to do this year to get a feel for what you think of it?

I don't think the two are mutually exclusive. Even if you are in tax, you still have to deal with some financial accounting issues.

I'm finding that I would rather work in tax than audit or finanical reporting. Although, it looks like you did pretty good on FAR. What makes you think its not your thing?

Tax was my worst class in college but I loved doing tax. Audit was my favorite class in college and I found it to be not my cup of tea….

I'd say if you don't like audit, give tax a shot… Most people who don't like audit end up feeling more comfortable with tax (as opposed to hating accounting all together).

See if there is a VITA site close to you and consider volunteering this season. I tell the new folks every year that if they think they want to get into tax for a living but aren't sure, being a VITA volunteer will sway them one way or the other.

Are you basing this on how much you enjoyed studying? Because in that case, none of it is my cup of tea 🙂 I much prefer experience. Also, Reg was my favorite to study for, and I work in Financial Reporting….so there's that.

@monkeyva-cool! you work in financial reporting? when you started out did you find that you forgot a lot of the things you learned in school? Or that what you learned in school doesnt really equate to what you actually do on the job? I enjoy studying accounting. I liked studying for FAR and when i study it.. i GET IT. but at work, its like.. durrr… debits/credits? (well.. not to that extent but you get the idea)
