Good Day A71 Peeps:
This in an unorthodox topic–I want to know your inputs/thoughts for those that have interviewed or have met a person with sweaty palms. What was you initial impression? Before you begin to type your comments, let me give you some background on this condition–yes, it technically is a medical condition.
I, for one, unfortunately suffer from “Palmer Hyperhidrosis”. What is this, you ask? Well, its excessive sweating of the palms; its an annoying, embarrassing, and confidence-wrecking problem. From ruined paperwork to slippery handshakes, sweaty palms negatively impacts my social life and possibly career.
There are medications, but the side effects are not tolerable–believe me–I have tried them. Your mouth goes completely dry! Its like you neglected to hydrate your body for several days! Now try to speak with a dry mouth for a two hour interview.
All that being said, how in the world can I explain this to an interviewer? I want to disclose this condition immensely and let them know it is NOT due to nervousness nor lack of confidence! It truly is a medical condition! It makes me feel terrible to see them (interviewer/recruiter) wipe their hands after they have shaken mine! I can only imagine what runs through their minds!! Today, I interviewed for an accounting job and the above took place.
Wiping my palms on the pants is of no help, nor carrying a napkin inside my pocket for a “quick wipe” helps!!
Lastly, I even receive rude comments from family and friends such as: “Hey, did you touch the remote or did the dog lick it!” Yeah, the sweating is that bad.
