How do you deal with this loneliness if you have no one around you who is studying for CPA? How do you keep motivated by yourself?

It would be nice if every once in a while my kids would come downstairs to work on their homework at the table while I study. But otherwise, I just look at it as uninterrupted time, which I need.

It's not forever and I try to make a joke about it. To my coworkers I often say “Time to go home and listen to the dulcet tones of Peter Olinto (or Tim Geraty) whisper sett nothings about revenue recognition (or some other current topic)” or ‘Time to spend some quality time with my boyfriend Jeff as he sweet talks in his mellifluous voice about bonds on the way home” which always makes them laugh.

I've said it so many times now my boss will ask as I am on my way out “Is it time for the dulcet tones of some accounting guy?” LOL

This is an awesome thread… I keep studying for several months, at first at my house, unfortunately I don't have a pet yet… then I moved to the nearest library. There is a Starbucks next to it and the employees there are curious why I am always there…
    Hang in there!

Huh. I must be even more introverted than I thought, because studying alone is the only way I can effectively and efficiently absorb volumes of material.

I'm the grumpy person aggressively reserving those enclosed study rooms at the public library so I can have the quietest, most isolated, distraction-free environment possible.

I never thought about being alone while I studied – I prefer studying alone anyhow. I did miss time with my family and friends though. I studied on campus a couple of times (where I went to grad school) and happened to run into a group that was studying FAR. At first, it was nice but it got to be annoying. I was on a much faster schedule and most of the people wanted to understand 100% of any topic before moving on. When it's just me, I get to go at my own pace. I think what helped for me to keep from getting sad about missing people or telling everyone no for every social event is I kept my study periods short. Yes, while they were ongoing, they were miserable, but it made it easier to deal with knowing i was only doing this for 3-6 weeks at a time. I think if it does start to bother you, try a Starbucks or library as long as it doesn't affect your focus. Also, make time to go to dinner with a friend or do something fun for a couple of hours. This board helped a lot too – my weekends consisted of study for 1-2 hrs, goof off here for 10 minutes..study again..repeat. 🙂

This is a great community and forum! You are not alone when studying..physically yes! but we are all here to support and help each other. I cannot express enough how helpful it is. whenever I don't get a question from Becker I would copy and paste and guess what Another71 is the first one that pops up and someone would eventually help me understand. 🙂 The only downside, I visit this forum way too often! it does take away from my study time. Back to it now..

With Becker, Rogers, and Gleim, you are never alone : )

Besides, on the stroke of midnight, if you look through the corner of your eye, you will get a glimpse of Jeff Elliot because he has been hovering over you the entire time and didn't even know it. So you are never alone ; )

I am too talkative and find that I usually accomplish more in solitude.

I study alone too but I don't feel like lonely. I am not in CPA firms so people around me is not CPAs. I found another 71 where I can communicate to CPA candidates who understand what I'm taking about.

Being by myself and free of distraction enables me to fully put all of the responsibility on myself for my success or failure. In the quiet, lonely hours when doubt, fear, and pessimism whisper in your ear…that is when your character is tested.

To quote Rocky 4: “You're gonna have to go through hell, worse than any nightmare you've ever dreamed. But when it's over, I know you'll be the one standing. You know what you have to do. Do it.”

thank you all for all your great responses and encouragements! im new here on another 71, and i didnt know what to expect from this forum, but i see now this really does help me with feeling lonely!! Great!! part of the reason i feel alone is probably because im in japan, and there are not many studying for USCPA license here.

btw there are so many weird people in local libraries. this one guy who reads newspaper out loud right next to me everyday around 5pm… first i was really distracted but now i realize he keeps me updated with outside world. he is my 5pm news broadcaster.

yy612 – why are working toward USCPA? what will you do with it in Japan? i assume that Japan uses its own IFRS? please share if you don't mind. my father traveled there a lot as an engineer and took beautiful photographs throughout the country from the mid 1950s to mid 1960s. he was obsessed with Japan. he brought us back many gifts.
