I referee basketball as a part time job to my normal full time job. Since I started studying, I “closed out” my schedule for refereeing. Meaning I do not wish to be scheduled any summer games. Most chapters encourage summer development for the actual season, and I know our assignor has called people out before for not “working on their game” in the offseason.

I’m a young up and comer for our chapter. I’m doing really well and progressing. I talked to our assignor and he said he understood that careers come first and he would work with me on my scheduling. I sort of feel guilty not doing games, but I want to get these tests DONE and I feel doing games here and there would slow the process.

Has anyone had to drop a part time job in order to study?

Absolutely not, I would quit my job if possible. The weekly dedication will be a minimum of 20 hours to study.

Don't worry about it – if they take issue with you placing priority on your own professional development over a part-time job, then they are the ones who should be feeling guilty.

NO!

I dropped a running group that I was becoming “treasurer” for, Toastmasters, lunches with coworkers mostly, hanging out with friends/family, EVERYTHING basically to get this test done. You disappear for a few months and come out so much better off in the end. You can catch up on the hobbies and organizations when you're done. Especially if you're young. We have all the time in the world to do those things but the CPA most definitely is worth getting done earlier the better. I have a lot of friends that have put their social life above school because they can't fathom turning down their friends to focus on personal development. It's not selfish, it's discipline. I think the only other thing that might take precedence is if you have children & to give your spouse some time every week. Otherwise… CPA!

I'm not studying for the CPA exam yet but I am married with a 2 year old and I work FT. I've had to drop out of a friends wedding, delete social media and stop hanging out with other friends in order to complete my masters degree. If people don't understand that you have more important things going on, that's on them.

And if you can go without the extra money, go ahead and postpone it until you've finished the exams.

That said, you can do this exam even with a f/t and p/t job if its what you choose to do. Its HARD but doesn't have to be either / or unless you want it to be.
