As the title says, I have a newborn at home. Really just want to spend all my time with the little guy, but know I have to continue my studies once tax season is over. I’m kind of dreading it. Any parents out there who’ve experienced a similar situation where they feel bad for studying or knew they would have trouble getting motivated to study while trying to raise a newborn?

    Thanks

P.S. I’m studying for my retake for REG with Becker materials. Probably will be purchasing Ninja MCQ. Also, I haven’t passed a section of the exam yet, so I’m not on a super strict time crunch.

I have a 7 week old in my lap now as I study. Since he sleeps so much, I try to get in as much study time as I can while on leave. Since I'm up at 430 or 5Am for feedings, I stay up and study until I have to get my oldest ready for school. Once the baby starts crawling etc, my husband will (hopefully) help out more.

Passing the exam and raising a kid can be done, but it is hard and situations vary greatly from person to person. I'm a stay-at-home dad. I took my first accounting course when my son was born because my wife is a CPA and she makes enough money for us to live off one income. I thought this CPA thing is a good gig so I gave it a shot. Four years later I acquired all of the necessary classes to sit for the exam and I passed the exam.

It wasn't easy but it gave me something to do at night so I felt like I was “working,” because raising a kid, doing all of the housework, and cooking dinners everyday just wasn't enough (yeah, I'm kind of a workaholic). In the end it simply boils down to putting in enough hours to pass each section. Most of my free time was used to study – no more hanging out with friends, no more poker, a lot less drinking, and no TV time at night.

Sometimes I felt guilty about doing MCQ during the day when my kid wanted to play but then I just said, “When I pass my tests we'll have more money.” He knows money equals toys so he cheered me on the whole way. Yes he spent a bit of time in front of the TV and iPad but he functions just fine. He's happy, healthy, and his teachers say he's smart so I feel like a happy dad.

If you want the CPA just go out and pass the exam – it can be done even with kids and I think those little guys provide a lot more motivation and drive to get it done fast.

Thanks everyone. Your posts were meaningful and helpful. It's refreshing to read your points of view. I think my anxiety is because it is our first kid. I'm determined to be a CPA. Has to happen.

    Thanks again.

I regularly read my newborn daughter accounting information systems texts, and then after finishing up accounting swapped to AUD. It is all in the tone.
