Whenever I tell people I’m an accountant or that I’m working on my CPA people always automatically jump to the conclusion that I’m like a master of fraud and that I actually help managers hide the bad and buff up the good. I’m talking about adults here, not just high school hipsters who don’t actually know what they’re talking about (no offense to younger people here). Has anyone else noticed this? What’s the best/worst/funniest conversation you’ve had with someone when you’ve told them you are/want to be a CPA?

My role at all of my jobs I've had has been to inflate expenses, hide revenues, and dodge taxes all while pretending that that isn't what I do…isn't that what you guys all do too?

Polite people: “Oh, accounting? That must be really hard.”

Rude people: “Oh, accounting? That must be really boring.”

There are definitely a lot of negative stereotypes about accountants. It used to bother me, now I don't even notice it. Honestly, I think it is similar professional-grade office jobs — the boring/stress factor depends on what your role is and where you work.

With social media being popular (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc). People are starting to realize there are accountants with very active social lives, who are anything but boring. The tax thing (so can you do my taxes) may never get old though lol!

Accountant? Oh, you must love numbers, have zero personality, and you know taxes right?

The only taxes I do are my own and help out a few friends.

I can see where some of the negativity can come from. Being an accountant you are essentially charged with watching over the finances of the company. That means that you are the NO department. You have to tell people that they can't spend money. Or no, you can't be reimbursed for that expense because it is outside of the company's policies. Since we control the money we are usually the ones enforcing the company policies – bringing us back to being the NO department. I work for a bunch of doctors. If they only knew how to read company policies and follow them before spending money.

Its eye opening how financially irresponsible a lot of them are.

Doctors are the worst!! I work at a hospital and actually had one screaming at me recently. She didn't like that we had to collect FICA on her loan forgiveness amount. She kept yelling “but the loan is not INCOME!!” She wouldn't listen that the forgiveness of it made it income. Finally I told her to consult her personal tax professional and get out of my office. UGH!

Whenever I say I'm an accountant, almost every single time, people are like “WOW, I've heard thats sooo hard. I'm so bad at math!”. I had a drs appointment two weeks before my last section and my dr was wondering why my blood pressure was super high and after I told him I was studying for the CPA Exam, he was like “I have heard that's such a hard test”. LOL coming from an MD!

When I talk about being a CPA of course the math questions come up…my reply is usually and truthfully, “I don't know, I'm calculator dependent” “And yes I do taxes, but not for Free, and No I do not work for H&R Block. “

Ps: not starting a blog about tax franchises

Even the President thinks that Corporations can have their accountant find tax loopholes. Not ALL accountants know the tax loopholes! See below:

“You have accountants going to some big corporations — multinational corporations but that are clearly U.S.-based and have the bulk of their operations in the United States — and these accountants are saying, you know what, we found a great loophole — if you just flip your citizenship to another country, even though it’s just a paper transaction, we think we can get you out of paying a whole bunch of taxes. Well, it’s not fair. It’s not right.”

***PLEASE NOTE THIS POST IS NOT A POLITICAL JAB, IT JUST EXPLAINS A TYPICAL ACCOUNTANT STEREOTYPE***

Typical person: “Oh you're an accountant. You must be good at math. Here, help me with this Calc. problem.”

Me: **scratches head** Um . . . The answer is C. It's always C. Can't go wrong with C. Nope, good ole' C. **walks away slowly**
