Shouldn't discuss salary at Big 4?

    Hi,

I was told by some coworkers this was a great site for blogging questions about CPA stuff. So this is my question if someone would not mind chiming in. So I was recently hired at the famous Big 4 firm upon graduating last year. One of my buddies also got in at the Big 4 but at a different one. Anyway, we went out to lunch and he had some of his Big 4 friends with him I had never met and I went alone with no one from my firm. All in total it was 5 of us. Me and my friend were first year associates and his were one and two second year associates. So over lunch we began talking about how much money we planned to make as accountants you know just rambling about random figures none of us were going to make anytime soon. Well my friend mentioned how much his salary was when he was hired (54k) and mine was just shy at 52k. Me and my friend did not care as we have known each other for years. But one of his friends from his Big 4 firm began acting funny.

Turns out he was only offered 47k at his hiring. So it made things kind of awkward as a first year associate was making more than a second year associate. I got a bit nervous and changed the subject because the guy was just acting strange like he wanted to go storm in the office of whomever made the salary decision. I mean we are at the big 4 so eventually you will make a ton of money so me and my buddy did not really care. But that guy seemed to care a lot. I researched online about discussing salary at work and one article that said it was illegal? But then another said it was not? What does anyone think about this situation? Will we be in trouble if that guy goes and tells? It looks like this is a site for studying for the CPA which I am doing now but this just has been bothering me because I am curious what will happen on Monday. I talked with my friend and he said that guy has not spoken to him since or if he does it is very very brief.
