Master the CPA examParticipantHello all,
I received a call from a robert half recruiter and wanted to get some feedback from people who have dealt with them. I don’t want to waste my time meeting with a recruiter who just want to meet their candidate quota. Any advice will be helpful. I am located in NY btw.

Claudia408ParticipantAre you in Manhattan? I lived there for 2+ years and there are so many other better recruiters. Sorry I can't recommend any bc I'm back living in SF since 2009. But my experience with Robert Half has been mostly bad, they try to stick you anywhere they can, and it feels like they don't even read your resume or listen to what you told them in the initial meeting. It's about volume for them it seems… churn and burn!

MaLoTuParticipantI can't say anything really good about them either. I have attempted to get positions through them 2 different times and both times I went in for the initial visit and then never heard from them again.

How many letters do you needParticipantAs with any recruiting company it is very much recruiter dependent. My experiences have been generally terrible:
1. They will waste your time with a BS opportunity just to build their database and check the list that they have met you.
2. They are generally not as strong on the client relationship side as say an independent would be (independents usually have personal relationships with the client and that helps BIG time)
3. The only time I let them lead a salary negotiation they shot for 30% over the top range of a very large company (even I know that large companies have little flexibility outside the grade range). The last one nearly cost me the job until I just took over and dealt with the company directly.
With all that said, I have heard of a few people who have done very well with Robert Half recruiters, they just got in with the right one. It doesn't hurt to feel them out, but proceed with caution.

AnonymousInactiveI have worked with a Robert Half recruiter to be placed with a company. I worked there for 1.5 years. If the company was larger, I probably would have stayed longer. The urge to grow came, so I needed to move on. I loved my recruiter. We still talk occasionally, and he has provided me with sincere advice while in a job role that he did not place me in.
My experience with Robert Half was very pleasant, and I'd recommend the company. You just have to be careful what recruiter you work with. Once you start with one, you will be invisible to other RH recruiters… like they don't compete with each other. You can still be a candidate for someone else's job listing… they'll just split the fee they collect from the hiring company.

AnonymousInactiveAlso, it took me 8 months before I finally accepted a role they had for me. I was very specific in what I was looking for, and Shad Lira in the Houston office was very attentive. I hate the job I was with, knew I wanted to leave, but on my time. He encouraged me to get an MBA and a CPA when school and more tests were so far from my mind. I was excited to tell him that I'd passed the exam last month!

AnonymousInactiveI've gotten 3 excellent jobs from RHI but I've also been to RHI offices that are a complete waste of time. It's a crapshoot. But my current job that I've held for years was through RHI and they got me a $10k raise despite the fact that i was laid off with no bargaining power.

fuzyfro89ParticipantIt's hit or miss with all recruiters. The key is to find someone who's reputable and really listens to you vs just a salesperson who will throw your resume at everything and hope something sticks.
There's no science to finding a good one, since they all have to sort of contact you out of the blue. Of course, if you get referred by someone you trust, that's a good way to start, but most of us don't have that. Take a few minutes to talk to them on the phone. See if they seem intelligent, respectful, etc, and also see how hard they “sell” you. Too much, and they may not be good… or they may, but depends on what you think I suppose.

msgoldsParticipantI was in the middle of a job search not too long ago, and had a terrible experience with a Robert Half recruiter. He insisted on a face-to-face meeting during the work day in a location that was very inconvenient for me to get to. I refused and we wound up having a Skype meeting instead. He told me about this opportunity he was trying to fill, but when he sent me the job description it did not seem appealing to me at all. He then asked me to go into the city two days from then (with hardly any warning) to interview with that company. I live and work in the suburbs, so that would have been at least a full half-day of leave for an interview I was not too keen on doing in the first place. He was very rude about me declining that interview.
I was very clear about the type of position I was looking for, he sent me several more via e-mail but only one of them was for a position that appealed to me. I asked if he could set up an interview with them, but he kept ignoring and stonewalling me. By the time he actually got around to trying to schedule the interview, I had already accepted an offer elsewhere.
My other pet peeve is he insisted on chatting by phone rather than e-mail, and wouldn't answer my e-mail inquiries. I was working in a small company, so if somebody in the office had overheard me speaking with a recruiter, everybody would have known by the end of the day. I've had positive experiences with other recruiting firms like Randstad and KForce, but I don't think I would ever recommend Robert Half for job-seekers.

aj2013ParticipantI had a very good experience with Robert Half. They helped me job search while I was at a terrible job I found on my own. I guess I'll mimic what everyone else is saying and tell you it depends on the recruiter. Mine was awesome, listened to what I had to say, and knew the industry/local businesses.

AnonymousInactiveI got a phone call from one of their contract-to-hire recruiters. I didn't respond to her voicemail because I'm not looking for a contract role, but she called again the next day, so I spoke with her. She gave me the typical pitch and ultimately said she'd pass my info to a direct hire recruiter because I'm already employed and do not need part-time work. Never heard back from them, so my suspicion is that they have way more contractor positions, and when they find out you don't want one of those, they blow you off.
I met with a recruiter from a smaller firm and was really unimpressed. She found me on LinkedIn and asked for a full resume, which I sent her. She called me to set up a meeting, which I agreed to. She was late to the meeting, had not read my resume at all, and only had staff level positions to talk to me about. I've been a controller for 4 years, which my resume clearly indicates. Why would I be interested in a staff accountant position? When I told her this, she said she had an A/P manager role and tried to convince me that was “basically a controller role.” Um, no. It isn't. Unless Dell or IBM is looking for an A/P manager, get off my lawn.
This recruiting stuff is pretty shady. My only experience with a recruiter prior to this year was being contacted regarding a specific position with a company whose CEO had heard about me from someone else and wanted the recruiter to vet me and gauge my interest in leaving my current job. That was a lot more legit than this process of recruiters trolling for resumes, realizing you aren't desperate for a job and will say no if an opportunity doesn't appeal to you, and then never contacting you again.

rp 12ParticipantI will not write much positive about them (recruiters/search firms). I ended up getting more interviews on my own by applying via indeed.com. Also, like CaseyTX I sent my resume to lots of recruiters, and nothing much worked out, and they will show you the roles that are below your level. Some of them are really agressive too. If you're not interested with that company they will make sure you still interview and pursue them. Also, many of these recruiters work for same clients (hiring companies). Please note that it is really important to be patient in this process. It is frustrating, and I have been through this 2 times in my short working career.

KBinMNMemberHa! I contacted RH about 4 years ago, went into their office and talked to a recruiter. She steered me toward indeed.com (maybe because I didn't have my CPA at the time) and then I never heard from her again. Then out of nowhere last week someone called me from RH trying to get me back. I was pretty rude in return. So IMO they are useless.
