I am getting ready to apply for a cpa license in Pennsylvania and I wanted to use my experience from my old job, preparing financial statements at a real estate company, to fulfill the 1600 hour requirement. Upon reading the PA code I am not sure it will qualify. https://www.pacode.com/secure/data/049/chapter11/s11.55.html

    (c) Acceptable areas of qualified experience.
    (8) Management and supervision of accounting functions and preparing financial statements for profit or not-for-profit
    entities.

How would you interpret the second half of that statement? As “management and supervision of the preparation of financial statements OR “preparation of financial statements”?

Please say the second option 🙂

I think the key word in that sentence is Management and supervision of accounting functions *and* preparing financial statements for profit or not-for-profit.

It sounds to me like you need both the management of accounting functions and financial statement preparation.

Less is more in this situation.
I don't think they expect someone 1-2 years out of school to manage an accounting department.
You worked on financial statements. No need to elaborate or over complicate this.
Take a look at the Experience Verification form.

Did you have a CPA supervising you?

I worked under a CPA that can verify. That's what I was thinking, how many young accountants have supervisor experience, but was trying to get 2nd opinion. I am going to contact the State Board of Accountancy to get confirmation.

Protip – Don't give them your name when you call. Do it anonymous.

After re-reading I'm not even sure it is referring to managing other people. You can manage the accounts payable function for example.

I never thought of that, but you make a good point. I am going to contact the board and provide an update.

    Thanks

I am in PA and when I called asking about industry experience I wanted to use they said they couldn't tell me whether or not something would qualify. Have the CPA sign off on what you did, be detailed when you write up your duties, and submit it. The board will have to review it and make the decision.
