My bedroom is right next to the kitchen & i could hear every single sound coming from there. So my advice to completely block out sound is to use V-moda faders + noise canceling headphones at the same time. The faders do a great job by themselves & I actually use them when taking the CPA test (like the only thing allowed), but the noise canceling headphones in conjunction works wonders!

nice, I don't have noise cancelling headphones but it has been a struggle studying at starbucks lately because their music is so loud! I finally decided to play white noise sound in the background while listening to classical music, it really helps tune out other sounds and focus.

woah, that white noise is a little scary sounding. if no noise cancelling try the v-moda faders, they are 15-20 bucks & are simply amazing. i can't take a test without them!

I dropped $300 on Bose Noise Cancelling headphones. They're soooooo good.

I know at the center I went to they had giant ear muffs like the ones you use at a gun range lol

Why don't you just buy noise cancelling ear muffs? They're cheap too, these are under $12:

I used them with some $10 ear buds, much better than paying $300 for Bose noise cancelling headphones.

For the test I bought cheap ear plugs along with the headphones at Prometric. At home I use Bose QC15 (bought like 2 months before the newer ones came out) noise canceling headphones but had those before starting the test. Great for plane flights!

The noise at the testing center is nothing like a whiney dog so it is not bad at all.

I use a DOHM sound machine. Blocks out a lot of outside noise. I have the Bose sound canceling phones, but this works better for me when studying from home

I jam earplugs in my ears while I'm in the testing center plus put on the ear muffs they have in the terminal. Sometimes the earplugs get so far in there the prometric assistant has to wait while I struggle to take them out. I can't have any sound whatsoever, especially if someone in the testing center is taking BEC and typing away during the written portion.

@win2betmore: thanks for the suggestion I've been struggling with ear plugs and find them so uncomfortable didn't realize headphones would do the trick

@ijustwant76: do the Bose cancel out/lower background noise if there isn't any music playing in them? Did you get the ones that go into the ears or over the ears.. Thinking of getting them not sure which would be more comfortable

the bose qc15 are good at blocking out white noise or background noise, such as air plains or random sounds…but they do not do a very good job of blocking out voices. Although they are significantly better than nothing. I will say, i bought a pair before I know much abotu headphones, you can buy qc15 quality for a lot less (i think they are selling qc15 at sam's clab for 225 now) or you can spend that much and get a significant upgrade if you look at brands like seinheiser.
