I’ve done some research, spoke with recruiters and even turned down an offer. The offer was for a Base Salary of 18% more than I make now. Including year end bonus its about 10% more. I turned down the offer because my boss was out for surgery (i’m not phoning in/out a two week notice) and I really like the firm I’m at. However, I also want to be properly compensated. The firm recently took on 2 high profile, 7 figure clients, and I am handling the tax returns for these clients’ largest businesses (close to 6 figures in billings). Also, when a co-worker was out due to a death in the family I stepped up and took on his work. Large, 20+ state returns I never did before but went through learned the details and got it done. I pose to the group am I justified in asking for a raise given the large % increase or should I ask for something less? Or ask and accept a lower counter knowing i’m worth more?

It sounds like you like your job, and appreciate your boss. I would be straight with him/her and have a sit down meeting regarding their consideration on increasing your pay. It sounds like your performance is deserving. Come with all of your ammo, and it may sound funny, but rehearse the conversation prior. You don't need to bring up the other job offer and dont mention you are looking for any other jobs. You just need to have a genuine conversation about your thoughts. Your boss's response (action and emotions) to this conversation will give you your next steps. Even the best companies wont hand out free raises. Go after what you feel you deserve. The market will tell you when you are out of place. Also set realistic expectations. You are on a great first step though, putting in the work like it appears you are doing should always come first, IMO.

I went through this a couple years ago, I felt I was underpaid. I went to my boss and told him that I needed a raise, we talked about what I have done and what my goals were. We agreed on a figure, everyone was happy. I got a reasonable raise, and they got to keep me. I probably could have moved to a new firm and received a slightly higher raise, but I enjoy my office, the clients and the culture. The money was not everything.
