    Hello,

I am located in California and I am in need of some accounting classes to fulfill the 24 semester units in accounting field in order to sit for CPA exam.

I have read many reviews online that classes taken from LSU online indeed count toward the California education requirement. Yet, I sent an email to CPA exam unit in California (CBA) to confirm, I linked the school’s website to them and this is what they replied to me:

    https://www.outreach.lsu.edu/Extended-Campus/Online-Distance-Learning

Thank you for contacting the California Board of Accountancy (CBA). A review of the web site you forwarded indicated that the education offered was continuing education (CE). The CBA is unable to accept courses completed as CE towards the minimum requirements to sit for the CPA Exam or initial licensure under California’s jurisdiction. All courses considered towards the minimum qualifications to sit for the CPA Exam and initial licensure must be completed at an accredited, degree granting education institution, and be taken for either quarter or semester units.

The CBA says that LSU online classes are considered continuing education and they do not count toward the requirement to sit for CPA exam.

Can anybody clarify for me on this ?

    Thank you!

LSU offers several options through their online program, some of which are CE and some of which are classes for college credit. I would suggest sending the link to the syllabus for the specific classes that you want to take – for example https://moodle2.outreach.lsu.edu/syllabus/ACCT_4421_1.2_Syllabus.pdf Generally analyzing whether a class would count or not (for example, when transferring schools) is done on the basis of the syllabus. Another option would be to see if LSU could show any sort of “sample transcript” that you could submit and ask them if you had such, if it would count. (Like if they could send you a transcript for “Test Student” and “123 Testing Way” or something like that.) I'm guessing a test transcript isn't an option, but I don't know for sure. However, if you call the LSU registrar, there is a chance they'd know something else that they have that would be useful – perhaps some form of documentation that they frequently use.

The thing is, when you take for-credit classes via LSU Online, they show up on a LSU transcript as credit from LSU. I'm 99% sure there's no distinction that they're online. If you think it would be helpful, reach out to me on LinkedIn and I can scan in my transcript from LSU, cut off the part with my student info on it, and you can send it to them as a sample of “Would these courses be counted?”

I posted here (obviously 😛 ) but it's bugged and showing vvvictor as the last poster, and not showing up on the home page…so posting again to see if it will fix it.

No, the CBA did not say that LSU online classes are considered continuing education, they said the particular link you sent them was for continuing education (which it clearly states on the top of that particular webpage.)

Its semantics, if you can find a listing of LSU courses that are part of a degree program AND offered online, resend the email with that link. Its just the fact that webpage says continuing ed, not the school or the way the courses are delivered.

I believe this link is correct. Try this –

    https://is.lsu.edu/courselist.asp?cat=Accounting&nid=102&pg=

I have not taken any of the distance learning courses from LSU, but I seriously considered it. (Ended up taking community college courses instead).

So, I believe the link above is correct.

When I was researching it, LSU told me that the transcript will say “correspondence course”.

Please verify that, in case it has changed !!!

Just know that some states do not accept “correspondence courses”, even though they will accept “online courses”
